September 9th West Oak Middle School Update

September 9th, 2022

Dear Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,

We hope you are all doing well. As we finish with our third week of school it has been refreshing to see our students settle into their school routines and hopefully feeling much more comfortable with what school looks like this year. It has been great to see high levels of involvement with our sports and we encourage you and your child(ren) to keep a lookout for various clubs and activities starting up soon as well. Our goal is to get all students involved in some form of club, sport, or activity throughout the school year. Below are some important pieces of information from this past week and this upcoming week. Have a wonderful weekend!

Back2School Bash 9/9/22: Our Back2School Bash is tonight and will be located at the West Oak Campus. Expect a lot of food, games, music, and fun this Friday, 9/9, from 5:30-8:00pm. Activities will be in the West Oak Middle School and the West Oak Intermediate School gyms. Admission is $5 for students and $20 for families. We hope to see you there.

Late Start 9/12/22: To allow for our school to continually improve upon our instruction, we will be having our first last start of the school year this Monday, 9/12. School will begin at 10:00am and bus pick-up times will be 90 minutes later than they would typically be. Here is the bus schedule which gives the Late Start times, starting on page 5.

Parent University 9/14/22: The SEL committee will be holding their second Parent University this coming Wednesday, 9/14. That night, they will be presenting on the subject of, “Helping Students Cope with Difficult Situations.” This will be a remote Zoom presentation and it can be accessed through this link. We hope to see you there!

NJHS: National Junior Honor Society is the most prestigious and exclusive organization that middle schools have to offer. Students interested in being part of this organization must be of high moral character, centered on service towards others, and strong academically in school. Students must be in 7th or 8th grade and they must have made at least the “B” Honor Roll last trimester. Submission of an NJHS application is a requirement for interested candidates and will be reviewed by our NJHS panel. The deadline to submit these applications is Friday, 9/23, and can be found in the Front Office or with our NJHS Sponsor Steve Nolte. Here is the letter that was sent out to all of the potential student candidates. Please contact Steve Nolte, [email protected] if you have any questions.

Curriculum Night: Thank you to everyone who attended our 2nd Annual Curriculum Night this past Tuesday, 8/30. If you missed out and would still like to view the Slide Decks that were presented, they can be seen here. (6th grade7th grade8th gradeEncore)

Bus Information:  We are excited to announce that our bus company, Lakeside Transportation, will be using a new app called Traversa Ride 360. Parents and students can access their bus stop location, route, and pick up time on the Ride 360 mobile app. The app uses GPS geolocation to show bus arrivals each day. If you would like to receive instant notifications when delays or incidents affect your student's bus, please click here to view directions on how to register with Traversa Ride 360. Note: you will need your student’s ID number to register with the app.

PowerSchool Parent Portal: Our amazing Technology Department has made a step by step video for families to set up their accounts on our PowerSchool Parent Portal that is located on our PowerSchool website page. Here is the direct link to our PowerSchool webpage that includes: links, supporting documents, and the help video.

DESSA Screener: The SEL Committee is excited to announce that this year we will be moving to assess all students k-8th grade on their social-emotional strengths. This will help each school provide more in depth SEL Instruction and identify students that are in need of specialized supports as it pertains to their social-emotional health. For more information please review the following letter. If you have any questions or would like for your child to opt-out of this screener, please contact Mr. Pedersen.
