From the Desk of the SEL Committee:  Welcome to the next installment of the Happiness Advantage! This week we will be focusing on how happiness can help manage stress and anxiety.  In addition to all the benefits we’ve talked about the last several weeks so far, happiness also provides an antidote to stress, what psychologists call the “undoing effect”.  Happiness can “undo” the negative aftereffects of stress, anxiety, or negativity in general.  For instance, think about having to make a speech in front of a crowd of people; this tends to make people nervous and stressed. Feeling nervous, anxious, and stressed may cause you to think about everything that may go wrong, which in turn is setting yourself up for failure.  Instead, focus on the positive aspects or a time in the past where you were successful.  When you focus on the positives you are helping your brain destress and “undoing” the negativity you are feeling.

Race Against Gun Violence:  The MHS Black Student Union and the Mundelein My Brother’s Keeper Community are hosting the second annual Race Against Gun Violence 5K on June 13th.  Please see the press-release for information on how to sign-up.

Junior Police Academy: The Mundelein Police Department would like to invite all middle school students to join them for their Junior Police Academy program from 8:30-11:30 am, June 7-11. All students interested are welcome to participate in various activities in what police officers do on a daily basis. Click here for more details. If interested please complete the attached form and email it to Officer Sexton at [email protected].
