Dear Diamond Lake School (DLS) Families,
Over two decades of research has shown the important roles social and emotional skills play in each child’s success in school and the community. Skills such as demonstrating self-control, persisting at challenging tasks, and making good decisions are all necessary to being successful students and adults. The process by which students learn these and other similar skills are called social and emotional learning (SEL).
As part of this initiative, the teachers will be completing a short 8 question tool called the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment, or DESSA-mini. This tool asks how often a child has demonstrated specific social and emotional skills in the past month.
Some sample DESSA questions include:
How often did the child keep trying when unsuccessful?
How often did the child offer to help somebody?
How often did the child work well in groups?
The purpose of the DESSA is to identify which SEL skills your child has already learned and what skills he or she might still need to develop. Once our teachers identify the skills their students still need to learn, they will teach those SEL skills. Our goal is to ensure that your child is continuously developing the SEL skills that they need for lifelong success. We believe that the information gathered from the DESSA will be beneficial to your child’s overall success both inside and outside of the classroom.
The DESSA is published by Aperture Education. Our district chose the DESSA in part because of Aperture Education’s strong commitment to respecting and protecting your child’s privacy. Hundreds of school districts and afterschool programs nationwide utilize the DESSA and trust Aperture Education with protecting their students’ data. Our first Family Night of the year is approaching and, of course, it’s a big one! Our event will be called Noche de los Amigos, Night of Friends. On Wednesday, September 27th 5:00-7:00 pm DLS will be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with different cultural and academic activity tables along with a taco truck, Spanish music, and dancers. We are also anticipating the completion of our new playground by this time and will be starting the event with an official ribbon cutting to welcome our families and encourage play and the exploration of cross-cultural friendships at the early childhood level. Important Information
Food Service: Each month our breakfast and lunch menus will be provided in our Family Communications as well as posted on our website. Click HERE for the breakfast menu and HERE for the lunch menu.
Required Health Forms: Please be aware that per the state of Illinois all students entering Preschool, Kindergarten, and 2nd Grade must have their age appropriate health forms submitted to our front office by Monday, October 16th. Below you will see the requirements for each grade level. Please note that students entering 1st Grade are not required to submit health forms of any nature. If we do not receive the required forms by Monday, October 16th, your students will not be able to attend school until the forms are completed and turned into our office.
Preschool: Physical only
Kindergarten: Immunization, physical, dental, and vision
2nd Grade: Dental only
Smile Dentist: On Friday, October 20th, we will be welcoming Smile Dentist to DLS. Families will have the opportunity to sign their children up for a free dental check-up and cleaning. Click HERE for more information.
Medication Authorization Form: If your child needs to take medication of any kind throughout the school day, in response to allergies, or under specific circumstances, families are required to complete the D76 Medical Authorization form. Portions of the form must be completed by your child’s physician. Click HERE to access the form. In addition to the completed form, families must provide the medication in its original container. Printed copies of the form are also available in our front office.

Más de dos décadas de investigaciones han demostrado el importante papel que desempeñan las habilidades sociales y emocionales en el éxito de cada niño en la escuela y la comunidad. Habilidades como demostrar autocontrol, persistir en tareas desafiantes y tomar buenas decisiones son necesarias para ser estudiantes y adultos exitosos. El proceso mediante el cual los estudiantes aprenden estas y otras habilidades similares se llama aprendizaje social y emocional (SEL).
Como parte de esta iniciativa, los maestros completarán una breve herramienta de 8 preguntas llamada Evaluación de las fortalezas de los estudiantes de Devereux, o DESSA-mini. Esta herramienta pregunta con qué frecuencia un niño ha demostrado habilidades sociales y emocionales específicas durante el último mes.
Algunos ejemplos de preguntas de DESSA incluyen:

El propósito de DESSA es identificar qué habilidades SEL su hijo ya ha aprendido y qué habilidades aún podría necesitar desarrollar. Una vez que nuestros maestros identifiquen las habilidades que sus estudiantes aún necesitan aprender, enseñarán esas habilidades SEL. Nuestro objetivo es garantizar que su hijo desarrolle continuamente las habilidades SEL que necesita para tener éxito en la vida. Creemos que la información recopilada de DESSA será beneficiosa para el éxito general de su hijo tanto dentro como fuera del aula.

Se acerca nuestra primera Noche Familiar del año y, por supuesto, ¡es grande! Nuestro evento se llamará Noche de los Amigos. El miércoles 27 de septiembre de 5:00 a 7:00 pm DLS celebrará el Mes de la Herencia Hispana con diferentes mesas de actividades culturales y académicas junto con un camión de tacos, música española y bailarines. También estamos anticipando la finalización de nuestro nuevo patio de juegos para esta fecha y comenzaremos el evento con un corte de cinta oficial para dar la bienvenida a nuestras familias y fomentar el juego y la exploración de amistades interculturales en el nivel de la primera infancia. Formulario de autorización de medicación: Si su hijo necesita tomar medicamentos de cualquier tipo durante el día escolar, en respuesta a alergias o en circunstancias específicas, las familias deben completar el formulario de Autorización médica D76. El médico de su hijo debe completar partes del formulario. Haga clic AQUÍ para acceder al formulario. Además del formulario completo, las familias deberán entregar el medicamento en su envase original. Copias impresas del formulario también están disponibles en nuestra oficina principal.
