May 19th: Diamond Lake School Weekly Updates

Dear Diamond Lake School (DLS) Families,

Last week we wrapped up our Teacher Appreciation Week with the Diamond Diner!  It was a special event with students being given the opportunity to show their gratitude and appreciation while practicing Math skills such as counting money, pictographs, and sorting.  It was an incredible experience designed by our Speech Pathologist Ms. Jenny Landuyt, Special Education Teacher Ms. Katelyn Cairns, and Instructional Math Coach Ms. Vicki Reilly.  DLS students were so proud to serve their teachers.  Click HERE to view this terrific video of the experience.

Congratulations to the 33 young artists at DLS whose work was on display at the Stevenson and/or Mundelein High School Community Art Shows.  At both of these events students’ work from D76 and surrounding districts were on display for families and community members to admire.  Different types of artwork such as masks, sculptures, and printmaking pieces sparkled throughout the shows.

We would also like to congratulate our Community Cuddles winners for the month of May!  Eduardo Mata, Shaan Malters, Carli Collins, Oscar Gerzon, Ruby Sacho, Allison Juarez Salgado, Khloe Parada, Byron Quebrado, Richard Teran, and Julia Casteneda will be visiting Patch 22 farm in Wadsworth.  Patch 22 is the farm where we donated our chicks.  Farmer Dan will be welcoming us to give back to conduct a special interview with him and help out around the farm.  We look forward to this experience.

DLS Family Night: Around the World Math Exploration is this Tuesday, May 23rd!  Our goal is to provide families with a fun experience that can assist in students practicing Math concepts, skills, and facts over the summer.  Take a look at the details below.

"All Board Diamond Airways.  This is your captain speaking.  Tonight you will be traveling around the world for a wild adventure of problem solving, higher order thinking, and fact fluency.  So, fasten your seatbelt, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!"

  • Stations will be set up around the perimeter of the gym with different Math activities and explorations from around the world that students will engage in.

  • Prior to entering the gym, families receive a DLS passport along with a Boarding Pass from our Bilingual Parent Advisory Council (BPAC) representatives who will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and also provide materials and/or resources about D76 BPAC for the upcoming school year.

  • The passport will be used with the goal that students "travel around the world" by the time they exit the gym.  Approximately stations, DLS staff will work the stations and place a country sticker in the students’ passports prior to their “landing” to show they have "traveled" to that table.

  • Once families enter the gym, they will also receive a folder with a symbol of a suitcase on the front of it to represent their luggage that will be packed with Math activities, strategies, and tools by the end of their trip around the gym.

  • Once families have “landed safely and exited the aircraft,” they will travel through Terminal 5, same as the international terminal number at O'Hare Airport, to the arrival party in the cafeteria with cultural refreshments and a photo spot for families to take a vacation photo.

We look forward to this being a great night and hope to see you there!

PBIS Challenge #11:  As we near the end of the school year, school supplies and locker goodies will be coming home.  Ask your child, “How can you be responsible and organize your supplies at home so that you can use them this summer?”  Summer practice is a great way to continue to enhance your skills and sparkle with learning!

Have a great weekend!

Important Information

Library Books

Mrs. Parduhn is currently working to get all of our library books checked back in, but in order to do so we need students to return all the materials they have checked out.  Please be sure to check your child’s backpack and your home for any books your child checked out at the DLS Library and brought home with them.  You are welcome to return the books to our front office or simply send them back with your child.  We still have a significant number of books and materials floating around out there.
