Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
We hope you and your loved ones had a restful, enjoyable and safe holiday. We had a very busy first week back, with girls volleyball starting and sewing club beginning. We look forward to the Spelling Bee this upcoming Thursday morning in the gym. As the vast majority of you are aware, we have a significant uptick in the number of positive COVID cases and quarantine situations for students and staff across Lake County. We remind everyone to monitor their symptoms and please report any symptoms or exposure to our nurse. We encourage everyone to check our COVID dashboard for current information and quarantine requirements. Please see below for important updates and information, including testing locations.
Progress Reports and STAR Scores: Today you should be receiving your student’s STAR Reading and STAR Math winter scores from the tests we took in December. Overall students performed very well and should be proud of themselves. Additionally, today marks the halfway point in the Trimester. That means grades should be up-to-date in PowerSchool so you know exactly where your student stands in each class. Please contact your student’s teacher if you have any questions about grades.
COVID Testing Sites and Vaccination Communication: In an effort to keep everyone safe, healthy and well, you may get tested for COVID-19 at testing locations in the area. Please click here for locations, dates and hours of FREE testing sites regardless of symptoms.
On Monday Dr. Sharma-Lewis sent an updated vaccination and District Health and safety plan to families. Please click here to read that communication.
Parent University: Our district's SEL Committee presented before winter break its most recent Parent University on the subject of "Building Positive Behavioral Supports at Home." This presentation can be viewed here. The SEL Committee is also excited to announce that the next Parent University presentation will be next Wednesday, January 12th at 6:30pm, on the extremely important subject of "Cybersecurity Best Practices and Social Media Awareness for Families." This virtual event can be viewed by using our Parent University webpage. We hope to see you there.
School Readiness: Next week our PBIS school focus will be on some of the basic building wide rules involving dress code and technology. We ask for your partnership as we reinforce a few rules and norms in the building:
Cell phones need to be off and put-away until the end of the day.
Students should refrain from putting their hoods-up or wearing hats.
Students should keep their airpods put-away or leave them at home.
Students should make sure their shirts do not expose their stomach.
8th Grade Families: It is time to submit Tribute ads for your 8th grader for the Yearbook. Please see the English Version and here is the Spanish Version of the flyers for more information.
Girls Volleyball: 7th and 8th Grade Girls Volleyball tryouts will remain open for students that were unable to be at school this week in order to attend tryouts. Please see this flyer for more information.
Coffee with the Principals: The Principals of all three schools will be holding a Virtual Coffee with the Principals event on Tuesday, February 1st, at 6pm.
ACCESS Testing: Our EL students will be participating in ACCESS testing during January 18th-January 28th. Students from each grade level will test in various designated locations during their exploratory/encore classes. Feel free to contact Nicole with any questions or concerns.

Tuvimos una primera semana muy ocupada, con el inicio del voleibol femenino y el inicio del club de costura. Esperamos con ansias el concurso de ortografía el próximo jueves por la mañana en el gimnasio. Como la gran mayoría de ustedes saben, tenemos un aumento significativo en la cantidad de casos positivos de COVID y situaciones de cuarentena para los estudiantes y el personal en todo el condado de Lake. Recordamos a todos que controlen sus síntomas y que informen de cualquier síntoma o exposición a nuestra enfermera. Universidad de Padres: El Comité SEL de nuestro distrito presentó antes de las vacaciones de invierno su Universidad de Padres más reciente sobre el tema de "Construir apoyos conductuales positivos en el hogar".
