January 20th West Oak Middle School Newsletter

January 20th, 2023

Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,

We hope you are doing well. Now that we are back from break we have entered a very busy, but exciting time of the year. Girls volleyball and our co-ed wrestling seasons are underway. Mundelein and Stevenson High Schools are giving our 8th grade students tours of their buildings and information about what they have to offer for our students next year. On top of all of that, we held our annual Spelling Bee this week. Thank you to all the families that came in to support our students during these events. Please review the following items and feel free to reach out to our Main Office if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!

MHS 8th Grade Course Selections: Almost all of our 8th grade students that will be attending Mundelein High School next year will be selecting their courses on Thursday, 1/26. Guidance counselors from MHS will be meeting with each of these students  in the cafeteria that morning.  Course selection is such an exciting and important time, as such, parents are invited to come and join their student(s) for that event. Here is the schedule for when each student will be leaving their class and meeting with their counselor.

OMNI Event: On January 20th, OMNI Youth Services will be providing an activity during lunch periods for all of our WOMS students. This activity will focus on staying substance free and other aspects of prevention.  Students who choose to participate will be given a hot chocolate pouch to take home.  Please contact Ms. Harmon or Mr. Carr if you have any questions.

Free Throw Challenge: The Knights of Columbus at Santa Maria del Popolo Catholic Church will be holding a basketball free throw challenge on Saturday, January 21 at 10:00 am. This event will be open to boys and girls, ages 9-14 and is not a basketball game, but simply a contest as to who can make the highest number of baskets in a free throw contest.  Winners will be determined by age/sex group based on the most baskets made out of 15 attempts and will advance to the Knights of Columbus District Level Competition. This event promises to be fun for all.

PTO Fundraiser: Our wonderful PTO has set up a fundraiser for the month this month at Tina G's on January 23rd from 11-9:00pm. Our PTO will receive 10% from all proceeds raised during this time.  Here is the flyer for more details. (English/Spanish) We hope to see you there!

The assessment will start on January 23 and goes through February 3rd. Here is a letter with more details and resources. If you have any questions please reach out to the Main Office.

Parent University: Thank you to everyone that attended our SEL Committee's latest Parent University on "Understanding IEP's." Dr. Olsen and Mr. Freiburger gave a lot of great information on this very important subject. If you missed this week’s event, it can be accessed here.  Be on the lookout for our next Parent University on the subject of, "Understanding and Promoting Diversity and Inclusion." This will be on February 8th, at 6:30pm. We hope to see you there
