Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
Welcome to the new year! It was great to get our staff and students back in the building. Our school’s wrestling team had their first meet and we saw an excellent turnout for our girls volleyball tryouts this week. Please be advised, there will be no school next Monday, 1/16, as we observe Martin Luther King Day. Although next week will be shortened, we have a number of activities and events planned. Parent University: Thank you to everyone that attended our SEL Committee's latest Parent University on "Understanding IEP's." Dr. Olsen and Mr. Freiburger gave a lot of great information on this very important subject. If you missed this week’s event, it can be accessed here. Be on the lookout for our next Parent University on the subject of, "Understanding and Promoting Diversity and Inclusion." This will be on February 8th, at 6:30pm. We hope to see you there.
ACCESS Testing: Each year our English Language Learners within our school are assessed in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking the English language. The assessment will start on January 23 and go through February 3rd. Here is a letter with more details and resources. If you have any questions please reach out to the Main Office.
Spelling Bee: This year's Spelling Bee is right around the corner and will take place on Thursday, January 19th, at 8:45 am in the West Oak gymnasium. Parents of participants are welcome to come support and encourage their child during the event. We hope to see you there.
MHS Night: Mundelein High School is excited to invite our families and incoming ninth graders to the Class of 2027 Night on Thursday, January 19th. They ask that parents/guardians and students with last names A-L arrive at the MHS auditorium by 6:00 PM for a 45-minute presentation and parents/guardians and students with last names M-Z to attend the 7:15 PM session in the auditorium. The program will include an overview of our academic programs, course placements, information on a “day-in-the-life of a ninth grader,” and extracurricular opportunities at MHS. Incoming ninth graders will meet with high school students to learn more about what they will experience as they transition to MHS. Topics such as classes, activities, athletics, and special events will be discussed. Students will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the transition to high school. Following the presentations, we will host our Activities/Athletics Fair, where sponsors, coaches, and students will speak about their respective clubs or sports, answer questions, and enlist future members. Simplifying Stevenson: Stevenson High School is offering an event on Thursday, 1/19, at 7:00 pm to discuss programmatic offerings and how to be a successful student in high school. This will take place at Ivy Hall Elementary School, located at 1072 Ivy Hall Lane in Buffalo Grove, at 7:00pm, and it will be open to all 8th grade students planning to attend Stevenson High School next year. SHS Fine Arts Tour: All 8th grade students planning to attend Stevenson High School will be going to Woodlawn Middle School next Friday, January 20th, from 1:00-2:30pm to attend a presentation of Stevenson High School’s Fine Arts Department. Here is the Slide Deck containing more information.
OMNI Event: On January 20th, OMNI Youth Services will be providing an activity during lunch periods for all of our WOMS students. This activity will focus on staying substance free and other aspects of prevention. Students who choose to participate will be given a hot chocolate pouch to take home. Please contact Ms. Harmon or Mr. Carr if you have any questions.
Free Throw Challenge: The Knights of Columbus at Santa Maria del Popolo Catholic Church will be holding a basketball free throw challenge on Saturday, January 21 at 10:00 am. This event will be open to boys and girls, ages 9-14 and is not a basketball game, but simply a contest as to who can make the highest number of baskets in a free throw contest. Winners will be determined by age/sex group based on the most baskets made out of 15 attempts and will advance to the Knights of Columbus District Level Competition. This event promises to be fun for all.
Mundelein Building Tours: Mundelein High School building visits are being offered throughout the upcoming spring. Please complete this form if you would like to schedule a time to learn about their building and what they have to offer students and families.
8th Grade Tributes: Attention 8th grade families, you have the opportunity to write your 8th grade student a tribute for our yearbook. This special message, along with a baby photo, will be published in the 22/23 yearbook. Take a look before your chance is gone! This opportunity goes through February or until space is full. Hola Estudiantes y familias de la escuela secundaria West Oak,
Bienvenido al año nuevo! Fue genial tener a nuestro personal y estudiantes de vuelta en el edificio. El equipo de lucha libre de nuestra escuela tuvo su primer encuentro y vimos una excelente participación en nuestras pruebas de voleibol femenino esta semana. Tenga en cuenta que no habrá clases el próximo lunes, 1/16, ya que celebramos el Día de Martin Luther King. Aunque la próxima semana será más corta, tenemos planeadas una serie de actividades y eventos. Revise los elementos a continuación y no dude en comunicarse con nuestra oficina principal si tiene alguna pregunta. ¡Ten un excelente fin de semana!
Universidad matriz: Gracias a todos los que asistieron a la última Universidad de Padres de nuestro Comité SEL sobre "Comprender los IEP". Pruebas de ACCESO:Cada año, nuestros estudiantes del idioma inglés dentro de nuestra escuela son evaluados en las áreas de lectura, escritura, comprensión auditiva y habla del idioma inglés. La evaluación comenzará el 23 de enero y terminará el 3 de febrero. Aquí hay una carta con más detalles y recursos. Si tiene alguna pregunta, comuníquese con la oficina principal.

Noche MHS:Mundelein High School se complace en invitar a nuestras familias y estudiantes de noveno grado a la Noche de la Clase de 2027 el jueves 19 de enero.el.Solicitan que los padres/tutores y estudiantes con apellidos A-L lleguen al auditorio de MHS a las 6:00 p. m. para una presentación de 45 minutos y que los padres/tutores y estudiantes con apellidos M-Z asistan a la sesión de las 7:15 p. m. en el auditorio. El programa incluirá una descripción general de nuestros programas académicos, ubicación de cursos, información sobre un "día en la vida de un estudiante de noveno grado" y oportunidades extracurriculares en MHS. Evento OMNI: El 20 de enero, OMNI Youth Services ofrecerá una actividad durante los períodos de almuerzo para todos nuestros estudiantes de WOMS. Esta actividad se centrará en mantenerse libre de sustancias y otros aspectos de la prevención. Los estudiantes que elijan participar recibirán una bolsa de chocolate caliente para llevar a casa. Desafío de tiros libres:Los Caballeros de Colón en la Iglesia Católica Santa Maria del Popolo llevarán a cabo un desafío de tiros libres de baloncesto el sábado 21 de enero a las 10:00 am. Este evento estará abierto a niños y niñas de 9 a 14 años y no es un juego de baloncesto, sino simplemente un concurso para ver quién puede hacer el mayor número de canastas en un concurso de tiros libres. Los ganadores se determinarán por grupo de edad/sexo en función de la mayor cantidad de canastas realizadas en 15 intentos y avanzarán a la competencia a nivel de distrito de Caballeros de Colón. Este evento promete ser divertido para todos.
Recorridos por el edificio Mundelein: Edificio de la escuela secundaria Mundelein vise ofrecerán asientos durante la próxima primavera. Por favor completa esto forma si desea programar un horario para aprender sobre su edificio y lo que tienen para ofrecer a los estudiantes y las familias.
