November 18th: West Oak Middle School Weekly Update

November 18th, 2022

Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,

We hope you are all doing well. Another productive week has now come and gone, and it is hard to believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner.  Student participation in West Oak Sports and Clubs has been amazing! Our boys basketball teams and the cheerleading squad are off to a great start this season.  Additionally, our clubs are meeting regularly throughout each week!  As a reminder, we will be running an Early Release schedule for our students on Monday, 11/21, with school ending at 11:55am. The drop-off times are listed on this document for all students taking the bus home after school that day. Also, there will be no school from Tuesday, 11/22, through Friday, 11/25. Below are some important pieces of information. We hope to see you all at our fall parent/teacher conferences next week. Have a great weekend and see you soon!

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Today, Friday 11/18 is the last day to sign up to meet with your child’s teacher(s) during parent/teacher conferences next Monday, 11/21. Here is the sign up page which can also be found on our “News” and “Parents and Community Page,” on our district website.  When you go to sign up to meet a teacher, please do the following:

  1. Select your teacher’s online sign up link.

  2. Select the time slot and fill in the required conference information.

    1. Select Conference Format

    2. Student Name

    3. Parent Name

    4. Email (used for scheduling the parent teacher video conference).

AAPPL Testing: All 6th through 8th grade students in our dual-language program, and students taking a Spanish class as an elective, are being assessed on their Spanish language acquisition in the areas of reading, writing, speaking and listening this week. These exams will help in the class placement process for students as they enter high school and will serve as a way we can monitor their growth throughout middle school.

PTO Fundraiser: Our wonderful PTO has scheduled another dine out for Tuesday, Nov 29 at Hitz Pizza.  The time for this will be from 11:00am-9:00pm and we will receive 15% of the proceeds raised. Here is the flyer for this event. English/Spanish. We hope to see you there!

Stevenson High School Language Placements: All 2023-2024 incoming Sender school students with prior coursework or experience, Heritage, or Native speakers interested in taking Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, or Latin must register for the benchmark exam scheduled for Saturday, December 17. Please visit the Stevenson website for more information and to register for the exam via this link. The deadline to register is Monday, December 12. There are two purposes for the benchmark exam:

  • As indicated by this assessment, your student's level of proficiency will be used to determine the appropriate level for course recommendation. This information will be mailed in mid-January prior to Stevenson's Course Selection evenings.

  • Course selection data collected is crucial to determining appropriate staffing, the number of seats, fiscal decisions, and building the master schedule for the following school year.

For more information, please visit the Stevenson website and Benchmark FAQ document. For additional questions, please email [email protected].

Parent University: Thank you to everyone who attended this week's Parent University on the subject of "Social Media Safety." Sheriff Deputy Francis Foy gave a lot of great information about the dangers of social media and how parents can help their children make responsible choices and to stay safe. If you missed his presentation, it can be viewed here. The next SEL committee's Parent University event will be December 14th on the subject of, "Building Positive Relationships with Your Child." We hope to see you there!

Dress Code: With our goal always being centered around teaching and learning, our students and teachers have worked together to update our school dress code policy. We felt that this was necessary given current dress styles and availability of clothes that students and families have access to. Our work on this and decisions made revolved around the question, “would it be a disruption to the student and teacher’s learning environment?” With student and staff input we feel that the new dress code is more fair and we hope that it offers some grace for students and families.  It allows our students and staff to more focus on what students are learning and what staff are teaching in the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact the Main Office at 847-566-9220.

Illinois State Report Card: Illinois has significantly changed their system for the Interactive Report Card and reintroduced it for the 21-22 school year.  The results have been released for the 21-22 school year.  We are pleased to report that all 3 of the D76 schools received a “Commendable” designation.  The “Commendable” designation is the second highest rating behind “Exemplary”.  A “Commendable” designation means that in each of our schools all subgroups of students made adequate progress and students showed adequate growth on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) taken each Spring.   Thank you all for your help and support. We couldn’t have achieved this designation without you and the hard work of your students.
