October 28th West Oak Middle School Update

October 28th, 2022

Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,

I hope you have had a nice week. We were quite busy here at West Oak as we celebrated Red Ribbon Week, theme days, had our October assembly and we began our Winter I sports season. We had great participation and students had a lot of fun making each of these events a positive experience for all. Below are a number of items that we wanted to share with you. Take care and have a great weekend!

Dia De Los Muertos: Excitement has been growing as our Dia De Los Muertos event is tonight, October 28th, from 6:00-8:00pm. Here is the flyer for more additional information. This is a community event that promises to be a great time with activities for all ages. We hope to see you and your family there.

October Assembly: West Oak Middle School held our October assembly today. During the event we finished with our SEL Mondays theme of “Social Media Safety,” as a sheriff deputy from the Lake County Police Department gave students our final lesson on the subject. We hope that the lessons learned from this unit will help our students be more informed, responsible, and safe while on social media. Also during our assembly we had two Halloween themed challenges for our students, announcing our Students of the Month, and handed out positive referrals. We hope that all students and staff had a great experience and we look forward to our November assembly in the next few weeks.

Parent University: Thank you to all who attended this week's Parent University on "Gun Safety." Mrs. April Oboikowitch gave a lot of good, practical information on how families can take proper precautions on how to keep children safe in their homes, but also the homes of others. Here is the video if you missed the presentation this week. The SEL Committee's next Parent University is scheduled for November 9th at 6:30pm and will be on the subject of "Social Media Safety." We look forward to seeing you there!

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Our sign-up window for parent/teacher conferences will open up next week and run from 11/1-11/18. Sign-ups will be located on our district and building websites and reminders will be sent via School Messenger. Similar to last year, families will have the option of meeting their child’s teachers remotely or in-person. Please RSVP your conference times at your earliest convenience as time slots are limited and will fill up quickly. Our teachers look forward to seeing you all soon!

RSV in Lake County: Please read the following English/Spanish memo that the Lake County Health Department has sent out in regards to RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) cases being on the rise this fall. We ask students to continue to practice good hygiene habits and to stay home if they are not feeling well.

Ice Cream Day:  Our wonderful PTO is having an ice cream fundraiser on November 11th. On this day they will be distributing ice cream during lunches to all that have ordered it. Here is the flyer to place an order for your child. Please remember that the deadline for ordering is November 4th and all orders must be dropped off at the West Oak Middle School Main Office.

HITZ Pizza: This weekend Hitz Pizza at 700 Butterfield Rd. in Mundelein will donate 15% of the total cost of your orders to the D76 PTO.  All you need to do is dine at Hitz today, tomorrow, or Sunday, mention you are with D76, and they will give back to our community and the hard working PTO that provides our district with various opportunities throughout the school year.  Enjoy!

1st Trimester Challenge: Our PBIS committee is working hard to keep our students engaged in their classes and helping them practice good behaviors and habits. On Monday, 10/24, we will be starting our “End of the 1st Trimester Challenge.” On our last day of the 1st trimester we will be running an early release schedule with students who have met this challenge going to various rooms for a movie and popcorn. To meet this challenge, students must be passing all their classes and getting to their classes on time. Please know that school will be let out at our regular time of 3:25pm that day. The purpose behind this event is to reward our students for their  hard work and to finish the 1st trimester in a positive way.

Esperamos verte a ti y a tu familia allí.
