Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
It’s hard to believe that we are entering the final week of the 1st Trimester! Teachers will be working with students and families over the next week to support students turning in assignments before Friday. Also, Parent/Teacher Conference registration will open this weekend. Please see the information about Parent/Teacher conferences and other important announcements below. As always, please contact your teachers with any questions or concerns. The teacher’s Google Voice phone numbers are on the WOMS At-A-Glance Website.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Conferences will be held on November 23rd this year from 1:00pm to 8:00pm. Conferences will be scheduled this year with individual teachers instead of teams. Conferences will be 10 minutes in length. Conference registration will open on Sunday, November 8th on our District website. Families will receive a communication from the district with instructions to book conferences. Please have your student’s schedule in front of you when you book conferences so you make sure to book a conference with all of your student’s teachers.
Grades: The End of Trimester 1 is November 13th. We know that some families have had circumstances beyond their control that have affected their student’s ability to complete all of their work. Teachers have been reaching out to individual students and families over the past week to discuss a “path to passing” for Trimester 1.
Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): We are writing to you to let you know Starting Monday, November 9th, students in grades 3-8 will be participating in the first annual Student Engagement Survey. This survey asks students about their experiences in school, giving teachers and school leaders critical student feedback. Students will take the student engagement survey on-line, it consists of 64 questions, and the survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes. The survey is confidential and anonymous. No individual responses will be reported; rather, the responses will be reported in an aggregate fashion at grade level across each building. If you have any questions please contact your building principal.
Our newly formed, district-wide SEL committee has been meeting regularly this semester to determine in which ways we can help our students, teachers, and families within the district. From our conversations we have determined our areas of focus will be:
1. Enhance our student/family services
2. Expand our staff's skill-sets
3. Embed social-emotional learning in our district's curriculum
4. Equip staff to improve their own social-emotional health
One way we will be addressing and working towards these four areas, will be by the implementation of specific themes throughout the year. Each month we will be sending out important information/activities that students, staff, and parents can use as it pertains to each theme. Please note that each theme will be modified to fit the ages of students in each specific building. The following themes are as follows:
November= Hispanic heritage
December= Bullying
January= Disability awareness
February= Black History Month
March= Appropriate social media use
April= Self/Peer Harm
May= Substance abuse awareness and prevention
All of these themes are tentative and we welcome any feedback to better meet the needs of our teachers as well as educate you and your families in these areas. Please let Brandon Pedersen know if you have any questions and if you would prefer that you and your child not participate in these themes. We will start sending information out soon.
Veteran’s Day: Veteran’s Day is on 11.11 this year. Our social studies teachers will be spending time with their classes discussing America’s Veterans and their sacrifices and contributions.
Families In Need: We have a few ways families can support other families in our community over the next few weeks. Our D76 PTA is sponsoring a Winter Clothing Drive from October 28th until November 12th. Diamond Lake SD 76 is partnering with the greater Mundelein Community to provide food to families for Thanksgiving now through November 15th. Here is the flyer in both English and Spanish. The drop-off locations for both drives are at West Oak Middle School.
Additionally, for those in need of groceries, the Northern Illinois Food Bank will be at the West Oak Campus on November 10th from 4pm to 5:30pm. Please see the flyers in English and Spanish for more information.
BPAC: Our Bilingual Parent Advisory Council will be sponsoring a guest speaker, Maria Rocha, who will be speaking about parent self-care when supporting students at home. The event will be 11.18 at 6pm. See the flyer for more information.
NIU Reading Program: Please see the attached flyer regarding a Fall Reading Skills Program opportunity.
Chromebooks and Other Devices: We strongly encourage all students to use the Chromebooks they have been given for remote learning. A family can use another device ONLY IF the student uses a Google Chrome Web Browser. Steps to use Google Chrome on another computer have been provided by our technology department and can be found here.
School Physicals and Immunizations: School physicals and immunizations were due for 6th grade students on October 1st. Please contact Julie Marchese, our School Nurse, with any questions at (847)566-9220.

Una forma en que abordaremos y trabajaremos en estas cuatro áreas será mediante la implementación de temas específicos a lo largo del año. Cada mes estaremos enviando información / actividades importantes que los estudiantes, el personal y los padres pueden usar en lo que respecta a cada tema. Tenga en cuenta que cada tema se modificará para adaptarse a las edades de los estudiantes en cada edificio específico. Los siguientes temas son los siguientes:

enero = concientización sobre discapacidades
febrero = mes de la historia afroamericana

Familias necesitadas: Tenemos algunas formas en que las familias pueden apoyar a otras familias en nuestra comunidad durante las próximas semanas. Nuestra PTA de D76 está patrocinando una colecta de ropa de invierno desde el 28 de octubre hasta el 12 de noviembre. Diamond Lake SD 76 se está asociando con la comunidad de Mundelein para proporcionar comida a las familias para el Día de Acción de Gracias desde ahora hasta el 15 de noviembre. BPAC: Nuestro Consejo Asesor de Padres Bilingüe patrocinará a una oradora invitada, Maria Rocha, quien hablará sobre el autocuidado de los padres cuando apoye a los estudiantes en casa. El evento será el 11.18 a las 6pm. Consulte el folleto para obtener más información.

Chromebooks y otros dispositivos: recomendamos encarecidamente a todos los estudiantes que utilicen los Chromebooks que se les han proporcionado para el aprendizaje remoto. Una familia puede usar otro dispositivo SOLO SI el estudiante usa un navegador web Google Chrome. Nuestro departamento de tecnología ha proporcionado los pasos para utilizar Google Chrome en otra computadora y se pueden encontrar aquí.
