Hello Fairhaven Families,
Welcome to the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year! The first few days of school have gone very smoothly, our students are already getting into the routine. It is amazing how quickly our young friends adjust to being back into the swing of school.
A few parents have had questions about why Fairhaven has chosen not to participate in viewing the total solar eclipse which is expected to take place on Monday. Space studies are a part of the first grade curriculum, however we do not begin that unit until February. Since the eclipse is taking place on our fourth day of school, we do not have an adequate amount of time to teach the concepts necessary for students to understand why the eclipse is a historic and important event. We understand that the eclipse is relevant to our science standards and we would like to have our students view the eclipse with their classmates after receiving appropriate instruction. Therefore, when we teach the space studies unit, we plan to have the students watch a recording of the eclipse. We are fortunate that our advanced technology will allow us to watch the eclipse later, when our students have the capacity to understand what is actually happening. If you would like to have your child view the eclipse with your family while it is happening, you are welcome to take your child out of school for the very special event. If you are unable to stay with your child to view it, and feel that your child will benefit from viewing the eclipse in live time, please contact me directly and we will discuss it together.
The first few days of school typically have some kinks to work out with our bus systems. Please assist us with making sure everyone gets home on time and that bus routes are run smoothly by making sure an adult is at the bus stop when the children are dropped off. We have reviewed and updated the bus pick-up and drop off times. Please click here to double check there have not been changes to your route: Fairhaven Bus Schedule. Just a friendly reminder that beginning Monday, if an adult is not at the bus stop waiting for your child, the bus will take him or her to Diamond Lake School. Your child will be placed on a second bus and sent to Fairhaven School, where he or she will be supervised in the After School Club Program until you arrive to pick your child up. If your child needs to be supervised in the After School Club Program, the cost to you will be $19.50. Please call the Fairhaven office as soon as you know that there is a possibility of even being a minute late, as soon as you become aware of the chance, so that we can problem solve with you. We would rather assist you in advance than having your child have such a lengthy afternoon with such a large cost to you.

A great way to directly support Fairhaven is to purchase books whenever we have a Scholastic Book Fair. We held a book fair during our back to school evening and would like to offer families an extended opportunity to make a purchase. Each purchase directly supports activities at Fairhaven so as a parent, you can feel great about encouraging reading while helping Fairhaven be able to buy the special fun supplies and rewards that our students love! Joining the Parent and Teacher Organization, or PTO, is another great way to support Fairhaven and District 76. The PTO provides our students with special events or supplies throughout the year. There are two great ways to be a part of the PTO. First, please become an active member of the PTO and assist by running special events such as holiday parties, organizing fundraisers, or assisting with any of the PTO sponsored events. The first PTO meeting of the year will be held at West Oak Middle School in the library at 7:00 PM on August 22nd. The PTO will be hosting their first fundraiser of the year, the Culver’s Dine Out on August 30th. We hope to see you at both!

¡Bienvenido al comienzo del año escolar 2017-2018! Los primeros días de escuela han estado muy bien, nuestros estudiantes ya están entrando a la rutina. Es increíble lo rápido que nuestros estudiantes se adaptan a estar de vuelta a la escuela.
Algunos padres han tenido preguntas sobre por qué Fairhaven ha decidido no participar en la visualización del eclipse solar que se espera el lunes. Los estudios espaciales son parte del currículo de primer grado, sin embargo no comenzamos esa unidad hasta febrero.
