Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
Thank you to all of the families that came out to see us at the PTO Back-to-School Bash this past Friday! We hope to see many of you again this Wednesday, September 22nd, from 5-8pm at Culver’s Night! Please note that Lifetouch had to cancel our upcoming Picture Day on September 21st. Picture Day will now be October 26th. Please see below for important information.
Picture Day: WOMS Picture Day is this Tuesday, September 21st. Students will be taking photos during the morning hours of school.
Parent PSA: We wanted to draw your attention to a few things happening in social media that your students may be seeing. First, there is a Tik Tok challenge happening right now where students steal and/or destroy school property. WOMS has not been affected by this challenge, but many districts around us have. We are asking that you please have a dialogue about this challenge with your students and reinforce respectful, responsible, and safe behavior at school.
Additionally, there is an app called Discord that is particularly popular with video game player communities but has expanded to cover a variety of topics. This social app is meant for students that are 13 or older and also has groups that are for those who are 18 or older. While there are parental control options, age controls are easy bypass. Students have been found to engage in some mature conversations with mature themes that are not appropriate for younger users. We encourage parents to regularly check their student’s social media accounts including this one, and not to allow students to take their phones or other technology to bed with them.
Clubs and Tutorial: Our clubs and Tutorial will be beginning in October. Next week’s parent communication will have detailed information about different clubs with meeting dates and sponsors.
Tutorial will be offered Monday-Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30pm. This time is an opportunity to complete schoolwork with the support of a teacher, and some students will be invited to work on literacy and math skills. Tutorial will begin on October 4th. A late bus is provided for students attending Tutorial.
Morning Drop-Off: Families, we ask that if you arrive early and are waiting with your student until they can enter the building, that you wait in the carpool lane and not in a parking spot. Thank you!
Mundelein High School Opportunities: Mundelein High School will be hosting a parent workshop that is open to the community. It will be held September 28th from 7:00-8:30 in the MHS Auditorium. Please see the flyers in English and Spanish for more information.

Día de las fotografías: El día de fotografías de WOMS es este martes 21 de septiembre. Los estudiantes tomarán fotos durante las horas de la mañana de la escuela.
Anuncio de servicio público para padres: Queríamos llamar su atención sobre algunas cosas que suceden en las redes sociales que sus estudiantes pueden estar viendo. Primero, hay un desafío de Tik Tok en este momento en el que los estudiantes roban y / o destruyen la propiedad de la escuela. WOMS no se ha visto afectado por este desafío, pero muchos distritos a nuestro alrededor sí.
