May 28th: Diamond Lake School Weekly Update

Hello Diamond Lake School Families,

Next Friday, one week from today, is our last day of school for the 2020-2021 school year!  Summer is a great time to practice social skills, either in person or virtually, so here are a few ideas:

1. Build relationships through virtual play dates. Set up a short FaceTime orZoom playdate for your child with a friend, and actively take part. Children will learn social skills by watching you engage in the conversation. Be the model of a sincere listener, giving your undivided attention. Gently guide your child if she or he begins to monopolize the conversation. With practice, your child will learn the “serve and return'' of being a respectful conversation partner.

2. Display kindness by reaching out to a new friend. Schedule a Houseparty or Zoom get-together with someone in your child’s class you previously hadn’t connected with. Discuss with your youngster the value of welcoming a newcomer. Since you didn’t have the opportunity to invite this new child previously for a play date, a short video date will provide an opportunity to practice kindness. Again, you should stay involved to model how to ask questions and wait for a response. Finding an interest that the children share might be the start of a budding friendship.

3. Teach your child empathy by being considerate of others. Have your child take part when you drop off something for a neighbor who cannot get out. Share with your child that the neighbor is elderly and must remain indoors right now. Chat about how to help out – whether that’s grocery shopping, baking brownies or walking the neighbor’s dog.  

4. Teach self-control by taking turns. Encourage patience and good manners by having Mom or Dad choose the bedtime story or board game for game night. You should prepare your child for this, if it’s new to them. Let your little one know that, “Today, it is Mom’s turn to choose the story, and tomorrow it will be your turn.” This is a skill that really gets a workout at school!

¡Hola familias de Diamond Lake!

El próximo viernes, una semana desde hoy, es el último día de la escuela para el año 2020-2021! El verano es el tiempo perfecto para practicar las habilidades sociales, sea en persona o virtual, aquí hay unas ideas:

1. Establezca relaciones a través de citas de juegos virtuales. Programe una cita breve de Facetime o Zoom para su hijo con un amigo y participe activamente. Los niños aprenden habilidades sociales al verlo participar en la conversación. Sea el modelo de un oyente sincero, prestando toda su atención. Guíe suavemente a su hijo si comienza a monopolizar la conversación. Con la práctica, su hijo aprenderá el “servicio y la devolución” de ser un compañero de conversación respetuoso.

2. Muestra amabilidad al acercarse a un nuevo amigo. Programe una reunión de Houseparty o Zoom con alguien de la clase de su hijo con quien no se había conectado anteriormente. Hable con su hijo sobre el valor de dar la bienvenida a un recién llegado. Como no tuvo la oportunidad de invitar a este nuevo niño a una cita para jugar, una breve cita en video le brindara una oportunidad de practicar amabilidad. Nuevamente, debe mantenerse involucrado para modelar cómo hacer preguntas y esperar  una respuesta. Encontrar un interés que los niños compartan podría ser el comienzo de una amistad en ciernes. 

3. Enséñele a su hijo la empatía siendo considerado con los demás. Haga que su hijo participe cuando le entregue algo a un vecino que no puede salir. Comparta con su hijo que el vecino es mayor y debe permanecer en el interior en este momento. Hable sobre cómo ayudar, ya sea de compras, hornear bizcochos de chocolate o pasear al perro del vecino. 

4. Enseña el autocontrol turnándose. Fomentar la paciencia y los buenos modales pidiendo a mamá o papá que elijan el cuento para dormir o el juego de mesa para la noche de juegos. Debe preparar a su hijo para esto, si es nuevo para el. Hágale saber a su pequeño que, “hoy es el turno de mamá de elegir la historia, y mañana será tu turno:. Esta es una habilidad que realmente se ejercita en la escuela!
