April 23rd: Diamond Lake School Weekly Update

Hello Diamond Lake School Families,

Several parents have asked what they can do at home in order to help their young child learn the skills we are teaching at school.  A few parents have commented that they would like real homework instead of just being asked to read with their child.  I would like to take a moment to stress how important that assignment really is!  In the early years of school here at Diamond Lake School, reading at home is incredibly important and will help your child build the necessary foundation to get through their entire school career.  Reading regularly helps children to learn to love books, allows you to spend time together, and reinforces all of the reading skills we are teaching during the day. Research clearly indicates that reading with your child every day makes a significant difference with doing well in school.  If you set aside 20 minutes of reading together daily, you will expose your child to 1.8 million words in a year and will dramatically improve your child’s reading skills.

Make reading a fun and interactive experience.  Young children tend to want to hear favorite books over and over again, so taking turns choosing the book can help introduce new titles and a variety of literary themes.  It can help children learn to take turns if you choose the book one day and your child chooses the book the next.  Children like to be a part of the reading experience with you, so let your child turn the pages while you read, finish sentences that rhyme, or read the words that he or she knows.  Take your time looking at pictures and talking about what you both see to take the shared experience even further.  You can even use different voices for different characters or substitute family member’s names in the story; the options are limitless, just have fun!

A parent reading together with their child is a wonderful shared experience that has a lifelong impact on student learning.  Having a reading routine lets your children know that you value an education and care about your child’s progress at school. Enjoy this precious time you have with your children!

¡Hola familias de Diamond Lake!

Varios padres han preguntado qué pueden hacer en casa para ayudar a sus hijos pequeños a aprender las habilidades que les estamos enseñando en la escuela. Algunos padres han comentado que les gustaría hacer verdaderas tareas en lugar de simplemente pedirles que lean con sus hijos. Me gustaría tomar un momento para enfatizar lo importante que es realmente la tarea! En los primeros años de la escuela aquí en Diamond Lake, leer en casa es increíblemente importante y ayudará a su hijo a construir la base necesaria para superar toda su carrera escolar. Leer con regularidad ayuda a los niños a aprender a amar los libros les permite pasar tiempo juntos y refuerza todas las habilidades de lectura que estamos enseñando durante el día. Las investigaciones indican claramente que leer con su hijo todos los días marca una diferencia significativa con el desempeño escolar.
