Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
It’s hard to believe we are approaching the end of April! We had a busy week that was highlighted by a presentation by OMNI to parents and to students about mental health awareness. Our track program is also “off and running!” It is not too late for students to join. Please see below for important updates regarding scheduling for next year, any 8th grade Promotion updates, and our IAR testing schedule. We encourage families to reference our WOMS At-A-Glance Website for updates and information.
IAR Testing: West Oak Middle School will begin conducting our Illinois Assessment of Readiness exams as required by the state, starting Tuesday, 5/4, and going through Monday, 5/10. This exam will only be administered to our in-person students each day from 8:30-10:00 am and will be assessing students grown in the areas of math and language arts. Here is the exam schedule during those days. To ensure that all students, remote and in-person, receive the greatest amount of synchronous instruction as possible, we will then run a Late Start schedule for all students on those testing days with 1st period starting at 10:00 am. Current 6th and 7th Grade Students: Last week we gave a scheduling presentation to the community about changes to the schedule and a survey some current 6th and 7th grade families need to take. We have now opened the survey to families to choose Spanish or the ENCORE wheel for the 2021-2022 school-year.
The survey gives a detailed description of the choice that each family is making. Please view the presentation and our Frequently Asked Questions document for additional information about our schedule changes for next year. Please reach out to me if you have any questions. The survey is due April 30th.
8th Grade Promotion: Last week we sent our letter home to 8th Grade parents. The two updates to 8th grade promotion are that we will plan to wait to hand-out tickets until the last week of May so tickets do not get lost, and that we will send out a survey soon asking parents if their student will be attending the ceremony and the last day of school festivities and how parents want their student’s name printed on the diploma and read out-loud.
After-School Sports Opportunities: All 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle school boys and girls have an opportunity to participate in afterschool sports camps from 3:45-5:00. Track and field, soccer and volleyball will be offered. There is no cost and physicals are not needed. Busses will not be provided. Students can still sign-up for Track & Field.

From the Desk of the SEL Committee: Welcome to our final installment for our SEL theme of mental health awareness. We hope this past week was beneficial with the offering of OMNI’s Mental Health Workshop that we offered to our parents and students. Through this presentation, the intention was that we all learn something and we hope that this opens up avenues to talk about mental health with your child. If you missed the presentation it can be viewed here. For our final week of this our theme, we would like to draw attention to a lesson Brandon Pedersen, our assistant principal, and Lindsay Harmon, our social worker, will be teaching each PE class in regards to Elyssa’s Mission, “Signs of Suicide.” During this time, our students will be taught on how to respond and what to do if a friend makes a concerning comment about harming themselves, by using the ACT approach. (Acknowledge, Care, Tell) We hope that our activities for students, teachers, and parents have been beneficial in drawing attention to the importance of emotional health. Happiness Advantage: Does happiness come before success or does success come before happiness? Well, if one was happy due to their success, then goals and ambitions would fade away. In fact, happiness precedes success; happiness is what promotes success, goals, and ambitions. Studies have shown that people who possess positive contentment actually live longer than those that fall on the pessimistic side. Happiness can improve our health (both mental and physical) which in turn keeps us working faster and longer encouraging additional success. Unhappy people actually take 1.25 more sick days per month (15 extra per year) than their optimistic comrades. The same argument can be made regarding a common cold; those that are more optimistic tend to fight off colds much better than those that are pessimistic. In fact, the positive people experienced fewer cold-like symptoms than their negative peers experienced! Those that take an extra moment to figure out how to ensure their own happiness and promote that mentality in their coworkers are additionally more productive and efficient workers.

Promoción de octavo grado: La semana pasada enviamos nuestra carta a los padres de octavo grado. Las dos actualizaciones a la promoción del 8vo grado son que planearemos esperar para entregar los boletos hasta la última semana de mayo para que los boletos no se pierdan, y que pronto enviaremos una encuesta preguntando a los padres si su estudiante asistirá a la ceremonia y el último día de las festividades escolares y cómo los padres quieren que el nombre de su estudiante se imprima en el diploma y se lea en voz alta.
Oportunidades deportivas después de la escuela: Todos los niños y niñas de sexto, séptimo y octavo grado de secundaria tienen la oportunidad de participar en campamentos deportivos después de la escuela de 3:45-5: 00. Se ofrecerá pista y campo, fútbol y voleibol. No hay ningún costo y no se necesitan exámenes físicos. No se proporcionarán autobuses. Los estudiantes aún pueden inscribirse en Track & Field.

Desde el escritorio del Comité SEL: Bienvenidos a nuestra última entrega de nuestro tema SEL de conciencia sobre la salud mental. Esperamos que la semana pasada haya sido beneficiosa con la oferta del Taller de Salud Mental de OMNI que ofrecimos a nuestros padres y estudiantes. A través de esta presentación, la intención fue que todos aprendamos algo y esperamos que esto abra caminos para hablar sobre salud mental con su hijo. Para nuestra última semana de este nuestro tema, nos gustaría llamar la atención sobre una lección que Brandon Pedersen, nuestro subdirector, y Lindsay Harmon, nuestra trabajadora social, enseñarán en cada clase de educación física con respecto a la misión de Elyssa, “Signos de suicidio. " Durante este tiempo, a nuestros estudiantes se les enseñará cómo responder y qué hacer si un amigo hace un comentario preocupante sobre hacerse daño a sí mismos, utilizando el enfoque ACT. Ventaja de la felicidad: ¿la felicidad viene antes que el éxito o el éxito antes que la felicidad? Bueno, si uno estaba feliz por su éxito, las metas y ambiciones se desvanecerán. Los estudios han demostrado que las personas que poseen una satisfacción positiva en realidad viven más que las que caen en el lado pesimista. La felicidad puede mejorar nuestra salud (tanto mental como física), lo que a su vez nos mantiene trabajando más rápido y por más tiempo, lo que fomenta el éxito adicional. Las personas infelices en realidad toman 1,25 días más de enfermedad al mes (15 más al año) que sus camaradas optimistas. El mismo argumento se puede hacer con respecto a un resfriado común; los más optimistas tienden a combatir los resfriados mucho mejor que los pesimistas. De hecho, las personas positivas experimentaron menos síntomas similares a los de un resfriado que los que experimentaron sus compañeros negativos. Aquellos que se toman un momento extra para descubrir cómo garantizar su propia felicidad y promover esa mentalidad en sus compañeros de trabajo, son además trabajadores más productivos y eficientes.
