Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
This week was the first week back for all of our staff in the building. It was great to see teachers here again as they prepare for Hybrid Learning. There is a significant amount of important information contained in this parent letter related to Hybrid Learning, as well as a number of other important initiatives and announcements. Please note that this Friday, 2.12, is an Early-Release Day for students. As always, please contact your teachers with any questions or concerns and refer to our WOMS At-A-Glance Website for useful links and information.
WOMS Return-To-School Plan: On Monday this week Dr. Sharma-Lewis communicated our Hybrid plans for families. In that letter was a communication from WOMS regarding our school-specific plan. Please read that letter here. A video presentation was also shared with families giving a basic framework for what In-Person Learning will look like at WOMS. The Principals hosted a Virtual Chat this week with families regarding the return to In-Person learning. There were a number of great questions. With some of the common themes of the questions in mind, here are a couple of pieces of information that may be of interest to you:
Students will load the bus back-to-front each morning and skip every-other seat. Students will wear a lanyard that says they are symptom-free in order to load the bus. On the first day of school for the A Day and B Day students, there will be a way to certify online because the students will be given lanyards upon arrival.
Students can bring their own lunch, but there will not be microwaves.
Students will sanitize their surfaces at the beginning and end of each class. One student will be dismissed from class to the bathroom at a time.
Students will need to bring water bottles.
Band and Choir will be running. Based on our numbers, we believe we will be able to accommodate all Band and Choir students. We have ordered PPE specific to Band.
Students do NOT need to bring supplies from the school supply list. A Chromebook, charger, and writing utensil will be the main items needed. Teachers will provide other materials if needed for students. Students will also receive a locker.

Schedule the Week of 2.15: February 15th will be our first week of Hybrid Learning. Please note that 2.16 and 2.18 will be asynchronous learning days for students in our Distance Learning Academy at home. The rationale for this is we need to provide orientation and routines for the students that are here for In-Person Learning, and the time it will take would be highly disruptive to the students at home. Here is specific information for each day:
Monday 2.15: No School (President’s Day)
Tuesday 2.16: First Day of Hybrid Learning for A Day Students (last names A-L)
Wednesday 2.17: Remote Learning for All Students (Building is deep-cleaned)
Thursday 2.18: First Day of Hybrid Learning for B Day Students (last names M-Z)
Friday 2.19: Second Day of Hybrid Learning for B Day Students; End of 2nd Trimester
Coffee with the Principals: WOMS will host a coffee with the Principals event this Wednesday, 2.10, at 10:30am to discuss our Hybrid plans with families. Please click here for the Zoom Meeting Link.
New Staff: We have a few leaves of absence at the middle school. We are pleased to introduce two new members of our West Oak team that are filling the leaves of absence for our teachers.
Will Carr, one of our outstanding learning associates, is teaching 8th grade ELA for Jeannette Hoffman until she returns later this month. You can reach him at [email protected].
Michael Mac Cormac is teaching 8th grade Social Studies for Christine Berrong until Spring Break. He will be co-teaching with Dr. Berrong next week in order to have a smooth transition. You can reach him at [email protected].
Supply Pickup: As mentioned in the section for the week of 2.15, we will have a supply pickup on Wednesday, 2.17 for our Distance Learning Academy students. The times for pickup are TBD.
Picture Day: Please save the date for our picture days at the West Oak Campus:
8th Grade Promotion: Please save the date for our 8th Grade Promotion! Our Promotion event is scheduled for June 2nd at 7pm. The event is slated to be held at Mundelein High School. While we do not know if COVID safety precautions and guidance from the Illinois Department Health will allow for an event at the high school, we wanted to communicate a tentative date. We will share more information as the date approaches. We will also be sending out Promotion gown ordering information near the end of February. There are no plans for an 8th Grade Dance this year.
This year the yearbook staff is continuing a program just for 8th graders and their families. This program allows parents/guardians to buy an eighth of a page personal ad in the yearbook to congratulate their 8th grader on their graduation from West Oak Middle School. Please read these two documents for more information.
Kindergarten Orientation: Incoming Kindergarten Orientation will be Tuesday, February 23rd, at 7pm. Please pass this flyer along to any families that need this information.
African-American History Month: Hello and welcome to the SEL committee’s February theme celebrating African-American History month. During this month the SEL committee will be providing resources and educating our students and staff on the significance of African-American history as well as providing multiple activities identifying profound individuals that helped drive progress towards equality in our country. In the spirit of African-American History Month we would like to invite you to have courageous conversations with your child about race. We understand that initiating these conversations can be challenging, so we would like to share with you this article by EmbraceRace that gives multiple ways to encourage dialogue with your child about this issue. We hope you find this valuable. We will be sharing with you other resources throughout the month.
From the desk of the SEL Committee: Welcome to the third installment of the Happiness Advantage! This week’s focus is on depression and how to persevere through it to the best of your abilities. Even students attending Harvard (“the world’s best and brightest [school]”) have something to be unhappy about. Today’s depression rates are actually ten times higher than they were in 1960. Back then, the average age for depression was 29.5 years old, however today, the average age is 14.5 years old! A Harvard study admitted that 4 out of 5 students attending Harvard experience depression. The study conducted was focused on the 1 in 5 students that were truly flourishing. The study highlighted the importance of investigating an individual’s happiness, performance, achievement, productivity, humor, energy, and resilience. Essentially, one must keep in mind “positive psychology” when pushing themself or being pushed in a specific direction. If one is able to maintain “positive psychology” then they will actually be able to surmount any depressive tendencies and glide through life serendipitously.

Con algunos de los temas comunes de las preguntas en mente, aquí hay un par de piezas de información que pueden ser de su interés:
Los estudiantes subirán al autobús de atrás hacia adelante cada mañana y se saltean los asientos. Los estudiantes usarán un cordón que diga que no tienen síntomas para poder subir al autobús. El primer día de clases para los estudiantes del Día A y del Día B, habrá una manera de certificarse en línea porque los estudiantes recibirán cordones al llegar.
Los estudiantes pueden traer su propio almuerzo, pero no habrá microondas.
Los estudiantes desinfectan sus superficies al principio y al final de cada clase. Un estudiante saldrá de la clase al baño a la vez.
Los estudiantes deberán traer botellas de agua.
La banda y el coro estarán presentes. Con base en nuestros números, creemos que podremos acomodar a todos los estudiantes de Banda y Coro. Hemos pedido PPE específico para Band.
Los estudiantes NO necesitan traer útiles de la lista de útiles escolares. Un Chromebook, un cargador y un utensilio de escritura serán los principales elementos necesarios. Los maestros proporcionarán otros materiales si es necesario para los estudiantes. Los estudiantes también recibirán un casillero.

Programe la semana del 2.15: el 15 de febrero será nuestra primera semana de aprendizaje híbrido. Promoción de octavo grado: ¡ Por favor, reserve la fecha para nuestra promoción de octavo grado! Nuestro evento de promoción está programado para el 2 de junio a las 7 pm. El evento está programado para realizarse en Mundelein High School. Si bien no sabemos si las precauciones de seguridad de COVID y la guía del Departamento de Salud de Illinois permitirán un evento en la escuela secundaria, queríamos comunicar una fecha tentativa. Compartiremos más información a medida que se acerque la fecha. También estaremos enviando información sobre pedidos de vestidos de promoción a fines de febrero. No hay planes para un baile de octavo grado este año.
Este año, el personal del anuario continúa con un programa solo para estudiantes de octavo grado y sus familias. Este programa permite a los padres / tutores comprar un anuncio personal de octavo de una página en el anuario para felicitar a su alumno de octavo grado por su graduación de la escuela secundaria West Oak. Mes de la Historia Afroamericana: Hola y bienvenido al tema de febrero del comité SEL que celebra el mes de la Historia Afroamericana. Durante este mes, el comité SEL proporcionará recursos y educará a nuestros estudiantes y personal sobre la importancia de la historia afroamericana, además de brindar múltiples actividades que identifican personas profundas que ayudaron a impulsar el progreso hacia la igualdad en nuestro país. Desde el escritorio del Comité SEL: ¡ Bienvenido a la tercera entrega de Happiness Advantage! El enfoque de esta semana es la depresión y cómo perseverar en ella lo mejor que pueda. Incluso los estudiantes que asisten a Harvard (“la [escuela] mejor y más brillante del mundo”) tienen algo de lo que sentirse infelices. Las tasas de depresión de hoy son en realidad diez veces más altas que en 1960. En ese entonces, la edad promedio para la depresión era de 29.5 años, sin embargo, hoy, ¡la edad promedio es de 14.5 años!
