Dear Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
We are only a week in, but we are already off to a strong start this school year. It has been a lot of fun connecting with our new students and reconnecting with our returning students. Next week we will be starting our first sports season and in a couple weeks our clubs will begin. It is definitely a fun and exciting time of the year for all! Please review the following announcements and feel free to reach out to the Main Office if you have any questions. Have a great weekend.
School Text Messages: School updates are communicated regularly via email and text. Please contact the Main Office if you need to update your personal email. We also encourage families to sign up for our text messaging service which can be accessed here.
Bus Routes: All eligible bus students have been notified of their pick up and drop off street intersections. Please refer to this document, which is also located on our building website, for the times of these pick ups and drop offs. New to this year, 5th grade Band students will also be taking the middle school buses home in the afternoon. Families are encouraged to opt into receiving instant notifications when delays or incidents affect their child’s bus times by creating an account with our Triversa Ride 360 app.
Breakfast and Lunch: All students in our district will be able to eat breakfast and lunch at no cost to families this year. Additionally, students will be able to choose from a cold and hot lunch option each day. We hope that this allows for students to find food options they prefer and that are best for them.
Parent University: Thank you everyone who attended our SEL Committee's first Parent University this week on the subject of our 1:1 Chromebook program. Our Director for Technology, Eric Hansen, gave insight on best practices, as well as expectations for students who have been issued a Chromebook this year. A recording of this presentation is attached HERE if you missed this event. Our next Parent University will be on the subject of our Executive Functioning program and how families can help their child be more organized. This will be held on September 6th at 5:30pm. We hope to see you then!
STAR Testing: Our first of three rounds of STAR Math and Reading testing for the year will be held next week. Our school start and end times will remain the same, but we will be running an AM Assembly schedule so that our students can complete these assessments and attend all of their classes these two days. We will be communicating to families the scores of these assessments soon.
Fall Athletics: Our fall sports will be in full swing starting the week of 8/28 and practices will be held from 3:30-5:00pm, Monday through Thursday. A bus will be provided at 5:00pm to take students home if needed. In order for students to participate in these activities, they must have an updated sports physical and parents will need to sign the Agreement to Participate form. Soccer/Basketball Tryouts: Tryouts for our girls and boys soccer teams as well as our girls basketball teams will be on Monday, 8/28, and Tuesday, 8/29, next week. Students need to arrive in athletic wear and a water bottle is strongly advised. Here is the letter from our girls soccer coach Ms. Pawlowski and here is the basketball letter from Mr. Cereghino and Ms. Enriquez.
Cross-Country: Cross-Country will begin practice on Monday, 8/28, and is open to all boys and girls, grades 6th-8th grade. Here is the letter from our coaches Ms. Grubb and Ms.Housinger.
Back to School Bash: Our PTO looks forward to hosting our annual Back to School Bash on Friday, September 8th from 6:00-8:00pm at our West Oak Campus. Curriculum Night: We are excited to announce that we will be having our 2nd annual Curriculum Night on Tuesday, 8/29. During this time, our teachers will be presenting on what they teach, why they teach it, and how students are assessed. Here is the description and schedule for this event.
Google Classroom and PowerSchool: All students have received their Chromebooks this week. As a reminder, students should charge their Chromebooks each night and bring their Chromebook and charger to school every day. Teachers will be using Google Classroom to share assignments and due dates with students. Additionally, we encourage parents to get involved with how their child is doing by setting up an account through our Parent Portal. Estimados estudiantes y familias de la Escuela Secundaria West Oak,
Solo llevamos una semana, pero ya hemos tenido un buen comienzo este año escolar. Ha sido muy divertido conectarnos con nuestros nuevos estudiantes y reconectarnos con nuestros estudiantes que regresan. La próxima semana estaremos iniciando nuestra primera temporada deportiva y en un par de semanas comenzarán nuestros clubes. ¡Definitivamente es una época del año divertida y emocionante para todos! Revise los siguientes anuncios y no dude en comunicarse con la oficina principal si tiene alguna pregunta. Ten un excelente fin de semana.
Mensajes de texto escolares: las actualizaciones escolares se comunican periódicamente por correo electrónico y mensajes de texto. Comuníquese con la oficina principal si necesita actualizar su correo electrónico personal. También animamos a las familias a registrarse en nuestro servicio de mensajes de texto al que se puede acceder aquí.
Rutas de autobús: Todos los estudiantes elegibles para el autobús han sido notificados sobre sus intersecciones de calles para recoger y dejar. Como novedad este año, los estudiantes de banda de quinto grado también tomarán los autobuses de la escuela intermedia a casa por la tarde. Desayuno y almuerzo: todos los estudiantes de nuestro distrito podrán desayunar y almorzar sin costo para las familias este año. Además, los estudiantes podrán elegir entre una opción de almuerzo frío y caliente todos los días. Esperamos que esto permita a los estudiantes encontrar las opciones de comida que prefieran y que sean mejores para ellos.
Universidad para padres: Gracias a todos los que asistieron a la primera Universidad para padres de nuestro Comité SEL esta semana sobre el tema de nuestro programa Chromebook 1:1. Exámenes STAR: Nuestra primera de tres rondas de exámenes STAR de Matemáticas y Lectura para el año se llevará a cabo la próxima semana. Nuestros horarios de inicio y finalización de clases seguirán siendo los mismos, pero tendremos un horario de asamblea por la mañana para que nuestros estudiantes puedan completar estas evaluaciones y asistir a todas sus clases estos dos días. Pronto estaremos comunicando a las familias los puntajes de estas evaluaciones.
Atletismo de otoño: Nuestros deportes de otoño estarán comenzando a partir de la semana del 28 de agosto y las prácticas se llevarán a cabo de 3:30 a 5:00 p.m., de lunes a jueves. Se proporcionará un autobús a las 5:00 p.m. para llevar a los estudiantes a casa si es necesario. Para que los estudiantes puedan participar en estas actividades, deben tener un examen físico deportivo actualizado y los padres deberán firmar la forma del Acuerdo de Participación. Aquí hay una lista de todos nuestros clubes y deportes en los que los estudiantes pueden participar este año. Pruebas de fútbol/baloncesto: Las pruebas para nuestros equipos de fútbol femenino y masculino, así como para nuestros equipos de baloncesto femenino, serán el lunes 8/28 y el martes 8/29 la próxima semana. Cross-Country: Cross-Country comenza a practicar el lunes 28 de agosto y está abierto a todos los niños y niñas, de 6.º a 8.º grado. Aquí está la carta de nuestras entrenadoras, la Sra. Grubb y la Sra. Housinger.
Fiesta de Regreso a la Escuela: Nuestro PTO espera organizar nuestra Fiesta de Regreso a la Escuela anual el viernes 8 de septiembre de 6:00 a 8:00 p.m. en nuestro campus de West Oak. Noche de plan de estudios: Nos complace anunciar que celebraremos nuestra segunda Noche de plan de estudios anual el martes 29 de agosto. Durante este tiempo, nuestros profesores presentarán lo que enseñan, por qué lo enseñan y cómo se evalúa a los estudiantes. Aquí es la descripción y horario de este evento.
Google Classroom y PowerSchool: todos los estudiantes recibieron sus Chromebooks esta semana. Como recordatorio, los estudiantes deben cargar sus Chromebooks todas las noches y traer su Chromebook y su cargador a la escuela todos los días.
