Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
We hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving break with family and friends! Congratulations to all of our Choir and Band performers this past week at the winter concerts! We have a busy few weeks ahead of us, so please see below for important updates. And please note that this Monday, December 6th, is a late-start (10:00am).
STAR Test: Next Wednesday and Thursday we will be taking our winter STAR benchmark test in math and reading. We use this information to inform our instruction and appropriate interventions for students. Students will be taking this test during their first period class.
NJHS: Steven Nolte, Special Education Teacher and Case Manager at WOMS, will be the sponsor for National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) this year. National Junior Honor Society is one of the most prestigious clubs offered at the middle school level. Current NJHS members will be meeting this month to pick officers for any vacant position. Students in 7th grade and 8th grade who made the A Honor or A/B Honor Roll are eligible to apply at this time to be in NJHS. Mr. Nolte shared the following blurb along with the application to students today.
Congratulations! You have earned the opportunity to apply to become a part of the West Oak National Junior Honor Society by achieving the grades to be on the A or AB honor roll. N.J.H.S. is a service organization of students that helps our immediate West Oak Families and people within our community. Membership, however, is more than an honor. It incurs a responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that are associated with N.J.H.S.
If you wish to be considered for N.J.H.S. membership, you must submit the attached application form by email to Mr. Nolte by December 17th. After submission, your application will then be presented to the NJHS faculty board for approval, which you will then be notified of by January 14th. If your application is approved you will then be required to attend an informational meeting on Monday, January 18th at 3:30 pm.
During the meeting, students will learn about the requirements needed to be in NJHS such as attending monthly meetings and completing service hours. Students will also be able to run for one of the NJHS student board positions that are open. The positions that may be available are President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, or Historian.

MHS Citizenship Classes: Mundelein High School is offering free citizenship classes to all who are interested. Please see this flyer for more information.
Stevenson High School Math Pathway Changes: Stevenson High School has changed the pathways and class order for students beginning next year. This will align Stevenson to other area districts, including Mundelein High School. As a result, beginning next year any student in 8th Grade Honors Math at West Oak will take Geometry instead of Algebra II. Please read this letter for more information.
Wrestling: The upcoming Wrestling season will begin December 6th. Practices will be Monday through Thursday from 3:30pm-5:00pm. Athletes need a sports physical on-file to participate. We are combining with Carl Sandburg Middle School, so their athletes will be joining us here at West Oak. Please note that when students are wrestling they will NOT be wearing masks, both at practice and during meets. Please contact coach Greg Bercos ([email protected]) for more information.

Cambios en la ruta de matemáticas de la escuela preparatoria de Stevenson: La escuela secundaria Stevenson ha cambiado las rutas y el orden de las clases para los estudiantes a partir del próximo año. Esto alineará a Stevenson con otros distritos del área, incluida la escuela preparatoria de Mundelein. Como resultado, a partir del próximo año, cualquier estudiante de Matemáticas con Honores de 8º grado en West Oak tomará Geometría en lugar de Álgebra II. Lea esta carta para obtener más información.
Lucha libre: La próxima temporada de lucha libre comenzará el 6 de diciembre. Las prácticas serán de lunes a jueves de 3:30 pm a 5:00 pm.
