January 7th: Diamond Lake School Weekly Update

Dear Diamond Lake School (DLS) Families,

Starting Monday, January 10th, DLS will conduct each school day on a new and improved building schedule.  Students will be engaging in English Language Arts (ELA) activities through a longer block of time in order to provide teachers with more instructional time and to provide students with more time to engage in and master grade level ELA standards.  We will also be introducing a new block of time in the schedule called What I Need (WIN).  WIN time will be designed for students to receive additional support in targeted skills in both ELA and/or Math.  Through differentiated instruction, students will strengthen their skills to reach levels of mastery and continue to build upon their foundation of understanding and application.  WIN time is specifically designed for individual students to learn and grow within their levels of performance.

We are also introducing a new Specials class called Makerspace.  Taught by Ms. Diane Bischoff, Makerspace will be making its debut at DLS on Monday and incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM).  STEAM provides students with hands-on learning experiences and lessons designed through inquiry-based learning which emphasizes the student's role in the learning process.  Rather than the teacher telling students what they need to know, students are encouraged to explore the material, ask questions, and share ideas.

The weekly Library class that students attend has also been redesigned.  Taught by Innovation Center Learning Associates, Ms. Denise Roswick and Ms. Karlie Orlando, students will attend the Library class once a week, engage in a group read aloud and follow up activity, and then check out books for the week.  In an effort to speed up the book return process, starting Monday we ask that students return all of their checked out materials one day prior to their scheduled class.  For example, if your child’s homeroom is scheduled to attend Library on Tuesday, we ask that they return their books to school on Monday.  Please see the Library schedule listed below.  

Finally, we will also be introducing Adaptive Applications through Art, Music, and Physical Education (AMP).  The AMP experience will take place in each classroom throughout the week.  Ms. Downing, Mr. Hackl, and Ms. Pawlowski will be stepping into classrooms to apply their areas of concentration in an academic setting.  Through this whole child learning process, we will be providing students with the opportunity to apply multiple skills and modalities to their overall learning and social emotional development.

Principal Coffee Talk

Mark your calendars!  On Tuesday, February 1st D76 will be hosting Coffee Talk with our Principals.  Mr. Peter Cunningham, Mr. Brandon Pedersen, Mr. Kurt Preble, and Dr. Erica Berger will be joining together to work with the community to answer any questions you may have or discuss various topics brought to the table.  

Parent University

Our district's Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Committee presented before winter break its most recent Parent University on the subject of "Building Positive Behavioral Supports at Home." This presentation can be viewed here. The SEL Committee is also excited to announce that the next Parent University presentation will be next Wednesday, January 12th at 6:30 pm, on the extremely important subject of "Cybersecurity Best Practices and Social Media Awareness for Families." This virtual event can be viewed by using our Parent University webpage.  We hope to see you there.

In an effort to keep everyone safe, healthy and well, you may get tested for COVID-19 at testing locations in the area. Please click HERE for locations, dates and hours of FREE testing sites regardless of symptoms.

Students and families in need within our community have benefited from the support of our Welcome Center/ Centro de Bienvenida, Coat Drives, Holiday Drives, Spring Basket events, Food Drives, Parent Education nights, and more.  We continue strengthening our partnership with surrounding districts and local agencies to provide these free resources for our D76 families.

Estimadas Familias de la Escuela Diamond Lake (DLS),

A partir del lunes 10 de enero, DLS llevará a cabo cada día escolar una nueva y mejor rutina. Los estudiantes participarán en actividades de artes del lenguaje inglés (ELA) durante un bloque de tiempo más largo para brindar a los maestros más tiempo de instrucción y brindar a los estudiantes más tiempo para participar y dominar los estándares de ELA de nivel de grado. También presentaremos un nuevo bloque de tiempo en el horario llamado Lo que Necesito (What I Need- WIN). El tiempo WIN se diseñará para que los estudiantes reciban apoyo adicional en habilidades específicas tanto en ELA como en Matemáticas. A través de la instrucción diferenciada, los estudiantes fortalecerán sus habilidades para alcanzar niveles de dominio y continuar construyendo sobre su base de comprensión y aplicación. El tiempo WIN está diseñado específicamente para que los estudiantes individuales aprendan y crezcan dentro de sus niveles de rendimiento.

También estamos presentando una nueva clase de Especiales llamada Makerspace. Enseñada por la Sra. La clase de biblioteca semanal a la que asisten los estudiantes también ha sido rediseñada. Enseñada por Asociadas de Aprendizaje del Centro de Innovación, la Sra. Denise Roswick y la Sra. Karlie Orlando, los estudiantes asistirán a la clase de biblioteca una vez por semana, participarán en una actividad de seguimiento y lectura en voz alta en grupo, y luego sacarán libros para la semana. En un esfuerzo por acelerar el proceso de devolución de libros, a partir del lunes les pedimos a los estudiantes que devuelvan todos sus materiales prestados un día antes de su clase programada. Por ejemplo, si el salón principal de su hijo está programado para asistir a la biblioteca el martes, le pedimos que devuelva sus libros a la escuela el lunes. Consulte el horario de la biblioteca que se detalla a continuación.

Finalmente, también presentaremos aplicaciones adaptativas a través del arte, música y educación física (AMP). La experiencia AMP se llevará a cabo en cada salón de clases durante la semana. La Sra. Downing, el Sr. Hackl y la Sra. Pawlowski ingresarán a los salones para aplicar sus áreas de concentración en un entorno académico. A través de este proceso de aprendizaje integral del niño, brindaremos a los estudiantes la oportunidad de aplicar múltiples habilidades y modalidades a su aprendizaje general y desarrollo social y emocional.

Café con la Directora

Universidad de Padres

El Comité de Aprendizaje Social y Emocional (SEL) de nuestro distrito presentó antes de las vacaciones de invierno su Universidad de Padres más reciente sobre el tema "Construir apoyos conductuales positivos en el hogar". Esta presentación se puede ver aquí. El Comité SEL también se complace en anunciar que la próxima presentación de la Universidad de Padres será el próximo miércoles 12 de enero a las 6:30 p.m., sobre el tema extremadamente importante de "Mejores prácticas de ciberseguridad y sobre las redes sociales para las familias".
