Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
We hope you are all doing well and that you had a nice Thanksgiving. Thank you to everyone that attended our parent/teacher conferences last week. We all really enjoyed seeing you! As a reminder, school will begin at 10:00 am Monday, 12/5, for our December Late Start. The pick-up times for all students riding the bus are listed on this document.. We have a lot of items to share with you below. Have a nice weekend!
AAPPL Testing: The AAPPL exam is the assessment we use to measure students' Spanish language acquisition in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. All of our dual-language students, and students that are currently taking Spanish as an elective course took these exams over the past two weeks. Results of these assessments will be provided to families shortly.
STAR testing: All students, 6th-8th grade will be taking the STAR Math and Reading assessments on Tuesday, 12/6, and Wednesday, 12/7, during their 1st periods. STAR is a computer-adaptive assessment that we use throughout the year to measure students’ academic growth and progress. Please contact the Main Office if you have any questions.
Extended absences: If you or your family are planning to be absent from school for an extended period of time, please contact the Main Office so that we can document this appropriately and inform your child’s teachers. More specific instructions will be available for families that are planning to be gone for more than 10 consecutive days.
Hat/Glove Drive: With the weather getting colder, our wonderful PTO will be holding a hat and glove drive next week, December 5-9. Please drop off or send with your child donations for this event. A collection box will be available inside Door #1.
Honor Rolls= We are proud to announce that 165 students achieved Honor Roll during the 1st Trimester! In order to honor this accomplishment, on Monday, 12/12, we will be providing the Honorees a light breakfast during their 1st period classes. At this time, each of these students will receive their Honor Roll certificate that will indicate whether they earned “A,” “A/B,” or “B” Honor Roll. Congratulations to all of these hard working students. We are proud of you!
Winter Band Concert: The West Oak band program will be having their annual winter concert on Wednesday, December 7th, in the West Oak Middle School gymnasium. The 5th and 6th grade band students will be performing at 6:00 pm and the 7th and 8th grade band students will be performing at 7:00 pm. Entrance for this event will be at Door #1 and they will open at 5:30 pm. Seating tends to fill up quickly, so please plan accordingly. The 5th and 6th grade students are expected to arrive and be ready to go in the band room by 5:45 pm, and the 7th and 8th grade students are expected to arrive and be ready to go in the band room by 6:45 pm. All band students should wear their black West Oak Band polo, black pants, black socks, and black shoes. Winter Choir Concert: Please join us for our Winter Choir Concert this Thursday, December 8th at 7:00 pm in the WOMS Gym. This concert includes all choir students in 5th-8th grade. Students should arrive between 6:30-6:40 pm in the choir room and are required to stay for the duration of the concert. Students will be provided a black West Oak Choir polo and will need to wear black dress pants, black socks, and black shoes. Innovation Learning: Innovation Learning will be offering full day academic programming during winter break. This is available for all Diamond Lake District 76 students K-8th grade. Stevenson High School Language Placements: All 2023-2024 incoming Sender School students with prior coursework or experience, Heritage, or Native speakers interested in taking Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, or Latin must register for the benchmark exam scheduled for Saturday, December 17. Please visit the Stevenson website for more information and to register for the exam via this link. The deadline to register is Monday, December 12. The purpose of the benchmark exam is two-fold:
As indicated by this assessment, your student's level of proficiency will be used to determine the appropriate level for course recommendation. This information will be mailed in mid-January prior to Stevenson's Course Selection evenings.
Course selection data collected is crucial to determining appropriate staffing, the number of seats, fiscal decisions, and building the master schedule for the following school year.

Hola estudiantes y familias de la escuela secundaria West Oak:
Esperamos que todos estén bien y que hayan tenido un buen Día de Acción de Gracias. Gracias a todos los que asistieron a nuestras conferencias de padres y maestros la semana pasada. ¡Todos disfrutamos mucho verte! Como recordatorio, la escuela comenzará a las 10:00 am el lunes 5 de diciembre para nuestro inicio tardío de diciembre. Pruebas AAPPL: El examen AAPPL es la evaluación que usamos para medir la adquisición del idioma español de los estudiantes en las áreas de lectura, escritura, habla y comprensión auditiva. Todos nuestros estudiantes bilingües y los estudiantes que actualmente toman español como curso electivo tomaron estos exámenes durante las últimas dos semanas. Para honrar este logro, el lunes, 12/12, estaremos brindando a los homenajeados un desayuno ligero durante su primer período de clases. En este momento, cada uno de estos estudiantes recibirá su certificado de Cuadro de Honor que indicará si obtuvo el Cuadro de Honor "A", "A/B" o "B". Felicitaciones a todos estos estudiantes trabajadores. ¡Estamos orgullosos de ti!
Concierto de banda de invierno: El programa de banda de West Oak tendrá su concierto anual de invierno el miércoles 7 de diciembre en el gimnasio de la escuela secundaria West Oak. Los estudiantes de banda de los grados 5 y 6 se presentarán a las 6:00 pm y los estudiantes de banda de los grados 7 y 8 se presentarán a las 7:00 pm.
