Dear Diamond Lake School (DLS) Families,
This week DLS students learned about the Lunar New Year in our Library Media Center. Mrs. Parduhn shared great books, videos, and activities with students to introduce the Lunar New Year, a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. This is the most important holiday in China, and it is also widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and countries with a significant Chinese population. People celebrating the Lunar New Year consider this a time of the year to reunite with immediate and extended family. As the Asian population is celebrating the year of the rabbit, students also learned which animal they connect to based on the year in which they were born according to the Chinese zodiac signs. We did it! Our DLS Cubs made our goal of earning more than 300 Cub Cards for the month of January. The awesome behavior that we are seeing in the classrooms, at lunch, and at recess has been fabulous. We will be celebrating our positive behavior with pajamas and a movie day on Thursday, February 2nd. Please be sure to send your child to school in their favorite PJ’s so they are nice and comfortable when they watch their movie. For the month of February, students will continue to earn Cub Cards. Once they earn a Cub Card, they will be able to enter it as a vote for one of three special days; Sports Day, Free App Choice Day, or Dress like a Superhero or Princess Day. We look forward to seeing which day earns the most votes. Keep up the terrific positive behavior!
Monday, February 6th is our 100th Day of School! It is hard to believe that we will soon be reaching the 100th day, but time flies when you’re having so much fun! Classrooms will be celebrating the 100th Day of School with special activities, visitors to their classrooms, and a story time with me. Our Math Interventionist, Kris Nordlund, and our Math Coach, Vicki Reilly, will also be joining classrooms for all different types of fun games to celebrate the number 100.
During the month of February, we will also be kicking off D76 Loves to Read. Each week during the month of February we will be celebrating the joys of reading and the power of a good book. Guest readers, BINGO boards of reading activities, and rich discussions about a good book will be filling D76 classrooms. We will also wrap-up this celebration at DLS in the beginning of March with the Read Across America event. More details to come!
Temperatures quickly changed and snow accumulated. Please remember that weather permitting students do go outside for recess. It is incredibly important that students are dressed appropriately in order to stay warm and avoid illness. Coats and jackets are a must and hats, gloves, and scarves are also encouraged as it gets colder. Please remember that students are also required to have boots and snow pants here at school in order to play in the grass or on recess equipment after it has snowed. Students without the appropriate winter gear will need to remain on the blacktop.
Finally, DLS will be hosting Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, March 16th 6:30-7:30 pm. If your child will be 5 years old by September 1st, 2023, we invite you to attend this informational session provided by the DLS Kindergarten Team. During this orientation, families will have the opportunity to pre-register their child for Kindergarten, learn more about our Dual Language program, and ask any questions you may have. The meeting will take place in the DLS Sparkle Center. If you are unable to attend, we will also be streaming the meeting live through our website and later sharing a recorded copy of the presentation.

Parent University
Thank you to everyone that attended our SEL Committee's latest Parent University called "Understanding IEP's." Dr. Olsen and Mr. Freiburger gave a lot of great information on this very important subject. If you missed last night's event, it can be accessed here. Be on the lookout for our next Parent University entitled "Understanding and Promoting Diversity and Inclusion." This will be on February 8th, at 6:30pm. We hope to see you there.
Valentine’s Day Reminder: Tuesday, February 14th
We want to ensure that all our students have the opportunity to celebrate and engage in a special morning of friendship, love, and kindness. Instead of students bringing items from home, we will be providing everything here at DLS. We will be having a building wide event with Celebration Stations. Please see the chart below for what we have planned.
We will kick off the morning with an all school assembly to introduce the activities. Students will then be assigned to a mixed group of Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade students and led by one of our homeroom teachers. We will have multiples of each station setup throughout the building and additional staff members will be working the stations for us. To continue with our practice of healthy snacks, each student will also receive a bag of Smart Pop Popcorn. We are confident that our students will have a great time celebrating Valentine’s Day in a friendly manner as the DLS community. We appreciate your understanding and ask that you please do not send your child to school with any Valentine’s Day items to pass out to other students.

Our Art Teacher, Ms. Jenna Downing, is collecting buttons for a project that our students will be working on. If you have any buttons; any size, any color that you can donate, please send them with your child.

Esta semana, los estudiantes de DLS aprendieron sobre el Año Nuevo Lunar en nuestro Centro de Medios de la Biblioteca. La Sra. Parduhn compartió excelentes libros, videos y actividades con los estudiantes para presentar el Año Nuevo Lunar, una celebración de la llegada de la primavera y el comienzo de un nuevo año en el calendario lunisolar. ¡Lo hicimos! Nuestros Cachorros de DLS lograron nuestra meta de ganar más de 300 Tarjetas Cachorros para el mes de enero. Estaremos celebrando nuestro comportamiento positivo con pijamas y un día de cine el jueves 2 de febrero. ¡El lunes 6 de febrero es nuestro día número 100 de clases! Es difícil creer que pronto llegaremos al día 100, ¡pero el tiempo vuela cuando te diviertes tanto! Los salones de clases celebrarán el día número 100 de clases con actividades especiales, visitantes a sus salones y una hora de cuentos conmigo. Nuestro intervencionista de matemáticas, Kris Nordlund, y nuestra entrenadora de matemáticas, Vicki Reilly, también se unirán a las aulas para diferentes tipos de juegos divertidos para celebrar el número 100.

Las temperaturas cambiaron rápidamente y la nieve se acumuló. Por favor recuerde que si el clima lo permite, los estudiantes salen afuera para el recreo. Es increíblemente importante que los estudiantes se vistan apropiadamente para mantenerse abrigados y evitar enfermedades. Los abrigos y chaquetas son imprescindibles y también se recomiendan sombreros, guantes y bufandas a medida que hace más frío. Recuerde que los estudiantes también deben tener botas y pantalones para la nieve aquí en la escuela para poder jugar en el césped o en el equipo de recreo después de que haya nevado. Los estudiantes sin el equipo de invierno apropiado deberán permanecer en el asfalto.
Finalmente, DLS será el anfitrión de la Orientación de Kindergarten el jueves 16 de marzo de 6:30 a 7:30 pm. Si su hijo tendrá 5 años antes del 1 de septiembre de 2023, lo recomendará a asistir a esta sesión informativa proporcionada por el equipo de Kindergarten de DLS. Durante esta orientación, las familias tendrán la oportunidad de preinscribir a su hijo para Kindergarten, obtener más información sobre nuestro programa de lenguaje dual y hacer cualquier pregunta que puedan tener. Recordatorio de San Valentín: martes 14 de febrero
Queremos asegurarnos de que todos nuestros estudiantes tengan la oportunidad de celebrar y participar en una mañana especial de amistad, amor y amabilidad. En lugar de que los estudiantes traigan artículos de casa, proporcionaremos todo aquí en DLS. Tendremos un evento en todo el edificio con Celebration Stations. Por favor, consulte la tabla a continuación para ver lo que hemos planeado.
Comenzaremos la mañana con una asamblea de toda la escuela para presentar las actividades.
