Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
We hope you are all doing well. Although we had a shortened week due to Election Day, a lot of great things are going on within our school. On Monday, our students who successfully met the requirements of our 1st Trimester Challenge earned popcorn and a movie of their choice. Our boys basketball teams had a successful start to their season, and today we will end the week with The PTO’s ice cream handout! Our 1st Trimester came to an end on November 4th, grades have now been finalized and will be distributed to families electronically today. Below are some updates about what is currently happening and future events that are coming up with our school. Have a great day, and for those who have served our country in the military, a great Veterans Day today.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parent/teacher conferences are coming up soon and our sign-up window is now open. Parents are able to attend virtually or meet with teachers in person. If needed please indicate if translation is needed for these meetings as well. Below is a short tutorial on how you can select your times with each of your child’s teachers. Our teachers look forward to seeing you soon!

AAPPL Testing: On Thursday, November 17, we will be assessing our students’ Spanish Language Acquisition for anyone that is currently in our Dual Language Program, and for students that are taking Spanish classes. (Letter) These exams will take place during students’ class periods and results will be available to families this spring.
Parent University: Thank you to everyone who attended this week's Parent University on the subject of "Social Media Safety." Sheriff Deputy Francis Foy gave a lot of great information about the dangers of social media and how parents can help their children make responsible choices and to stay safe. If you missed his presentation, it can be viewed here. The next SEL committee's Parent University event will be December 14th on the subject of, "Building Positive Relationships with Your Child." We hope to see you there!
Dress Code: With our goal always being centered around teaching and learning, our students and teachers have worked together to update our school dress code policy. We felt that this was necessary given current dress styles and availability of clothes that students and families have access to. Our work on this and decisions made revolved around the question, “would it be a disruption to the student and teacher’s learning environment?” With student and staff input we feel that the new dress code is more fair and we hope that it offers some grace for students and families. It allows our students and staff to more focus on what students are learning and what staff are teaching in the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact the Main Office at 847-566-9220.
Illinois State Report Card: Illinois has significantly changed their system for the Interactive Report Card and reintroduced it for the 21-22 school year. The results have been released for the 21-22 school year. We are pleased to report that all 3 of the D76 schools received a “Commendable” designation. The “Commendable” designation is the second highest rating behind “Exemplary”. A “Commendable” designation means that in each of our schools all subgroups of students made adequate progress and students showed adequate growth on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) taken each Spring. Thank you all for your help and support. We couldn’t have achieved this designation without you and the hard work of your students.

Stevenson's World Language department benchmark opportunity for languages other than Spanish is scheduled for Saturday, December 17 - for the 2023-2024 school year. Recommended copy for newsletters, etc., can be found here. Please include this information to 8th-grade families via your District's appropriate communication channels. The deadline to register for the exam is Monday, December 12.

Hola estudiantes y familias de la escuela secundaria West Oak
Esperamos que todos estén bien. Aunque tuvimos una semana más corta debido al día de las elecciones, están sucediendo muchas cosas maravillosas dentro de nuestra escuela. El lunes, nuestros estudiantes que cumplieron satisfactoriamente con los requisitos de nuestro 1er Trimestre Challenge ganaron palomitas de maíz y una película de su elección. ¡Nuestros equipos de baloncesto de niños tuvieron un comienzo exitoso en su temporada, y hoy terminaremos la semana con el reparto de helados del PTO! Nuestro primer trimestre llegó a su fin el 4 de noviembre, las calificaciones ya se han finalizado y se distribuirán electrónicamente a las familias hoy. A continuación hay algunas actualizaciones sobre lo que está sucediendo actualmente y los eventos futuros que se avecinan en nuestra escuela. Que tenga un gran día, y para aquellos que han servido a nuestro país en las fuerzas armadas, un gran Día de los Veteranos hoy.

Pruebas AAPPL: El jueves 17 de noviembre, evaluaremos la adquisición del idioma español de nuestros estudiantes para cualquiera que esté actualmente en nuestro Programa de Lenguaje Dual, junto con los estudiantes que están tomando clases de español. Universidad para Padres: Gracias a todos los que asistieron a la Universidad para Padres de esta semana sobre el tema "Seguridad en las redes sociales". El ayudante del alguacil Francis Foy brindó mucha información excelente sobre los peligros de las redes sociales y cómo los padres pueden ayudar a sus hijos a tomar decisiones responsables y mantenerse seguros. El próximo evento de la Universidad de Padres del comité SEL será el 14 de diciembre sobre el tema "Construir relaciones positivas con su hijo". ¡Esperamos verte ahí!
Código de vestimenta: con nuestro objetivo siempre centrado en la enseñanza y el aprendizaje, nuestros estudiantes y maestros han trabajado juntos para actualizar nuestra política de código de vestimenta escolar. Sentimos que esto era necesario dados los estilos de vestimenta actuales y la disponibilidad de ropa a la que tienen acceso los estudiantes y las familias. Nuestro trabajo sobre esto y las decisiones que tomamos giraron en torno a la pregunta, "¿sería una interrupción para el entorno de aprendizaje del estudiante y del maestro?" Con los comentarios de los estudiantes y el personal, creemos que el nuevo código de vestimenta es más justo y esperamos que ofrezca algo de gracia para los estudiantes y las familias. Permite que nuestros estudiantes y personal se concentren más en lo que los estudiantes están aprendiendo y lo que el personal está enseñando en el salón de clases. Boletín de calificaciones del estado de Illinois: Illinois ha cambiado significativamente su sistema para el Boletín de calificaciones interactivo y lo introdujo para el año escolar 21-22. Los resultados han sido publicados para el año escolar 21-22. Nos complace informar que las 3 escuelas del D76 recibieron una designación de "Encomiable". La designación "Encomiable" es la segunda calificación más alta detrás de "Ejemplar". Una designación "Encomiable" significa que en cada una de nuestras escuelas todos los subgrupos de estudiantes lograron un progreso adecuado y los estudiantes mostraron un crecimiento adecuado en la Evaluación de preparación de Illinois (IAR) que se toma cada primavera. Gracias a todos por su ayuda y apoyo. No podríamos haber logrado esta designación sin usted y el arduo trabajo de sus alumnos.
