Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
Thank you to everyone who volunteered and attended our Dia de los Muertos event last Friday. It was great to see our community gathered together, celebrating, and enjoying themselves. As a reminder, school will be starting at 10:00am on Monday, 11/7. All bus pick-ups will be about 90 minutes later than they usually are. Here is the bus route document for your reference. Also, we will not be having school next Tuesday, 11/8, due to it being Election Day. Below is a list of items that we wanted to share with you. Illinois State Report Card: Illinois has significantly changed their system for the Interactive Report Card and reintroduced it for the 21-22 school year. The results have been released for the 21-22 school year. We are pleased to report that all 3 of the D76 schools received a “Commendable” designation. The “Commendable” designation is the second highest rating behind “Exemplary”. A “Commendable” designation means that in each of our schools all subgroups of students made adequate progress and students showed adequate growth on the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) taken each Spring. Thank you all for your help and support. We couldn’t have achieved this designation without you and the hard work of your students.

Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parent/teacher conferences are coming up soon and our sign-up window is now open. Parents are able to attend virtually or meet with teachers in person. If needed please indicate if translation is needed for these meetings as well. Below is a short tutorial on how you can select your times with each of your child’s teachers. Our teachers look forward to seeing you soon!

Dress Code: With our goal always being centered around teaching and learning, our students and teachers have worked together to update our school dress code policy. We felt that this was necessary given current dress styles and availability of clothes that students and families have access to. Our work on this and decisions made revolved around the question, “would it be a disruption to the student and teacher’s learning environment?” With student and staff input we feel that the new dress code is more fair and we hope that it offers some grace for students and families. It allows our students and staff to more focus on what students are learning and what staff are teaching in the classroom. If you have any questions, please contact the Main Office at 847-566-9220.
1st Trimester Challenge: Over the past two weeks, the PBIS committee has challenged our students to get to class on time and to pass all of their classes before the end of our 1st Trimester. Students that are able to achieve this will earn a movie and popcorn Monday afternoon on 11/7. Since we introduced this challenge, we have seen a students work hard in these areas and we have seen great results. Students who do not meet this challenge will be given an opportunity to get their grades up in a structured study hall before report cards are distributed. Our hope for this incentive is that all of our students achieve success, feel proud of their accomplishments, and are acknowledged for their efforts. Stevenson's World Language department benchmark opportunity for languages other than Spanish is scheduled for Saturday, December 17 - for the 2023-2024 school year. Recommended copy for newsletters, etc., can be found here. Please include this information to 8th-grade families via your District's appropriate communication channels. The deadline to register for the exam is Monday, December 12.
RSV in Lake County: Please read the following English/Spanish memo that the Lake County Health Department has sent out in regards to RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) cases being on the rise this fall. We ask students to continue to practice good hygiene habits and to stay home if they are not feeling well.
Parent University: The SEL Committee's next Parent University is scheduled for November 9th at 6:30pm and will be on the subject of "Social Media Safety." We look forward to seeing you there!
Ice Cream Day: Our wonderful PTO is having an ice cream fundraiser on November 11th. On this day they will be distributing ice cream during lunches to all that have ordered it. Here is the flyer to place an order for your child. Please remember that the deadline for ordering is November 4th and all orders must be dropped off at the West Oak Middle School Main Office.

Hola estudiantes y familias de la escuela secundaria West Oak,
gracias a todos los que se ofrecieron como voluntarios y asistieron a nuestro evento del Día de los Muertos el viernes pasado. Fue genial ver a nuestra comunidad reunida, celebrando y divirtiéndose. Estado de Illinois: Illinois ha cambiado significativamente su sistema para el Boletín de calificaciones interactivo y lo introdujo para el año escolar 21-22. Los resultados han sido publicados para el año escolar 21-22. Nos complace informar que las 3 escuelas del D76 recibieron una designación de "Encomiable". La designación "Encomiable" es la segunda calificación más alta detrás de "Ejemplar". Una designación "Encomiable" significa que en cada una de nuestras escuelas todos los subgrupos de estudiantes lograron un progreso adecuado y los estudiantes mostraron un crecimiento adecuado en la Evaluación de preparación de Illinois (IAR) que se toma cada primavera. Gracias a todos por su ayuda y apoyo. No podríamos haber logrado esta designación sin usted y el arduo trabajo de sus alumnos.

Sentimos que esto era necesario dados los estilos de vestimenta actuales y la disponibilidad de ropa a la que tienen acceso los estudiantes y las familias. Nuestro trabajo sobre esto y las decisiones que tomamos giraron en torno a la pregunta, "¿sería una interrupción para el entorno de aprendizaje del estudiante y del maestro?" Con los comentarios de los estudiantes y el personal, creemos que el nuevo código de vestimenta es más justo y esperamos que ofrezca algo de gracia para los estudiantes y las familias. Desafío del 1.er trimestre: Durante las últimas dos semanas, el comité de PBIS ha desafiado a nuestros estudiantes a llegar a clase a tiempo y aprobar todas sus clases antes del final de nuestro 1.er trimestre. Los estudiantes que puedan lograr esto ganarán una película y palomitas de maíz el lunes por la tarde el 11/7. Desde que presentamos este desafío, hemos visto a los estudiantes trabajar duro en estas áreas y hemos visto excelentes resultados. Los estudiantes que no cumplan con este desafío tendrán la oportunidad de mejorar sus calificaciones en una sala de estudio estructurada antes de que se distribuyan las boletas de calificaciones. Nuestra esperanza para este incentivo es que todos nuestros estudiantes logren el éxito, se sientan orgullosos de sus logros y sean reconocidos por sus esfuerzos. La oportunidad de referencia del departamento de idiomas del mundo de Stevenson para otros idiomas además del español está programada para el sábado 17 de diciembre, para el año escolar 2023-2024. La fecha límite para registrarse para el examen es el lunes 12 de diciembre.
RSV en el condado de Lake: lea el siguiente inglés/español que el Departamento de Salud del condado de Lake ha enviado con respecto a los casos de RSV (virus sincitial respiratorio) que están aumentando este otoño. Les pedimos a los estudiantes que continúen practicando buenos hábitos de higiene y que se queden en casa si no se sienten bien.
Universidad para Padres: La próxima Universidad para Padres del Comité SEL está programada para el 9 de noviembre a las 6:30 p. m. y tratará el tema "Seguridad en las redes sociales". ¡Esperamos verlos allí!
Día del Helado: Nuestro maravilloso PTO tendrá una recaudación de fondos para helados el 11 de noviembre. En este día estarán repartiendo helados durante los almuerzos a todos los que lo hayan pedido. Aquí está el folleto para hacer un pedido para su hijo. Recuerde que la fecha límite para realizar pedidos es el 4 de noviembre y todos los pedidos deben entregarse en la oficina principal de West Oak Middle School.
