Hello Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
We hope you are all doing well. Our school had an amazing week, starting this past Monday where we were honored to showcase our school community to over 20 outside visitors from the Association for Illinois Middle Schools (AIMS). Teachers, administrators, and college students came to West Oak Middle School to directly observe the programming that we offer our students. It was an excellent way to highlight our amazing students, teachers, and school! Also, on Thursday our 7th grade boys basketball team defeated Daniel Wright Middle School to win the Patriot Conference championship! Truly a lot of things to be excited about and thankful for in our building. As a reminder, Winter Break will be from December 23rd through January 8th. During Winter Break there will be no school, and the building will be closed. We will return to school on January 9th and we will have a late start that day. Here is the bus schedule for pick up times on that day. We hope you have a restful, relaxing holiday season with your family and friends. Please review the following information below. Progress/STAR Reports: Student progress reports and reports from our second round of STAR testing were sent out this past Monday, 12/16. If you did not receive these emails, please contact the Main Office so that we can assist.
Mundelein Building Tours: Mundelein High School building visits are being offered throughout the upcoming spring. Please complete this form if you would like to schedule a time to learn about their building and what they have to offer students and families.
8th Grade Tributes: Attention 8th grade families, you have the opportunity to write your 8th grade student a tribute for our yearbook. This special message, along with a baby photo, will be published in the 22/23 yearbook. Take a look before your chance is gone! This opportunity goes through February or until space is full. District Calendars: For your reference here are our Board approved district calendars for the 23/24 and the 24/25 school years.
Spelling Bee: This year's Spelling Bee is right around the corner, it will take place on January 19th, at 8:45 am in the WOMS gymnasium. Please remember that permission slips for student participation are due no later than the end of the day on Thursday, 12/22. Parents of participants are more than welcome to come support and encourage their child during the event.
Attendance Procedures in District 76: One of the most important ways a student can be successful in school is through consistent, full-day school attendance. During the pandemic, District 76 schools took a pause on following some of our practices and procedures regarding attendance. We are beginning to follow these practices again. Before explaining these practices, please know that we are partners in supporting our students, and we believe strongly in supporting our families regarding student attendance and not punishing them.
The State considers Chronic Truancy to be 9 unexcused absences over 180 days. Chronic Absenteeism is 18 absences for any reason over 180 days. In order to alert parents/guardians to a high number of absences, an attendance letter will be sent home when a student reaches 5 unexcused absences or 8 absences for any reason, whichever occurs first. A second letter with a request for a conference will be sent home when a student reaches 9 unexcused absences or 12 absences for any reason, whichever occurs first. Additionally, a referral to the Lake County Truancy Office will be made when a student reaches 9 unexcused absences.
Please understand that each school is keenly aware that there are a number of illnesses moving through the community, and that a COVID diagnosis requires a student to stay home for 5 days. The attendance letters are a form of communication and documentation, and are not punitive for students or families. Please continue to have your child stay home if they are ill. If you are unsure about what to do, you can always contact your school nurse. It is very important that you call to report any absences so an absence is not marked unexcused. With the exception of COVID, a doctor's note needs to be provided if a student is home for more than 3 days.
Additionally, if your family plans to miss 10 consecutive days of school, please know that you will be dropped from school and will need to re-enroll when you return. To re-enroll, you will need to come to your child's school to verify your information on-file when your child returns. No new documentation or fees will need to be paid. Also, you will need to turn-in your Chromebook and any other technology to the school before you leave. Most importantly, you need to communicate to your school that you will be missing school for 10 consecutive days.

Mundelein High School would like to invite all students and families of incoming ninth graders to the Class of 2027 Night on Thursday, January 19th. They ask that parents/guardians and students with last names A-L arrive at the MHS auditorium by 6:00 PM for a 45-minute presentation. Parents/guardians and students with last names M-Z should attend the 7:15 PM session in the auditorium. The program will include an overview of their academic programs, course placements, information on the day-in-the-life of a ninth grader, and extracurricular opportunities at MHS. Incoming ninth graders will meet with high school students to learn more about what they will experience as they transition to MHS. Topics such as classes, activities, athletics, and special events will be discussed. Students will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the transition to high school. Following the presentations, they will host their Activities/Athletics Fair, where sponsors, coaches, and students will be available to speak about their respective clubs or sports, answer questions, and enlist future members. Hola Estudiantes y familias de la escuela secundaria West Oak,
Esperamos que estéis todos bien. Nuestra escuela tuvo una semana increíble., a partir de este pasado lunes donde fuimos honrados para mostrar nuestra comunidad escolar a más de 20 visitantes externos de la Asociación de Escuelas Intermedias de Illinois (AIMS). Maestros, administradores y estudiantes universitarios vinieron a la escuela secundaria West Oak para observar directamente la programación que ofrecemos a nuestros alumnos. ¡Fue una excelente manera de destacar a nuestros increíbles estudiantes, maestros y escuela! Además, el jueves, nuestro equipo de baloncesto masculino de 7º grado derrotó a la Escuela Intermedia Daniel Wright para ganar el campeonato de la Conferencia Patriota. Realmente hay muchas cosas por las que estar emocionado y agradecido en nuestro edificio. Como recordatorio, las vacaciones de invierno serán del 23 de diciembre al 8 de enero. Concurso de ortografía: El concurso de ortografía de este año está a la vuelta de la esquina,se llevará a cabo el 19 de enero a las 8:45 am en el gimnasio WOMS. Recuerde que las formas de permiso para la participación de los estudiantes deben entregarse a más tardar al final del día jueves 22/12. Los padres de los participantes son más que bienvenidos a apoyar y alentar a sus hijos durante el evento.
Procedimientos de Asistencia en el Distrito 76:Una de las formas más importantes en que un estudiante puede tener éxito en la escuela es a través de la asistencia constante a la escuela durante todo el día. Durante la pandemia, las escuelas del Distrito 76 hicieron una pausa para seguir algunas de nuestras prácticas y procedimientos con respecto a la asistencia. Estamos comenzando a seguir estas prácticas nuevamente. Antes de explicar estas prácticas, sepa que somos socios en el apoyo a nuestros estudiantes y creemos firmemente en apoyar a nuestras familias con respecto a la asistencia de los estudiantes y no castigarlos.
El Estado considera Ausentismo Crónico a 9 ausencias injustificadas durante 180 días. El ausentismo crónico es 18 ausencias por cualquier motivo durante 180 días. Con el fin de alertar a los padres/tutores sobre una gran cantidad de ausencias, se enviará a casa una carta de asistencia cuando un estudiante alcance 5 ausencias injustificadas u 8 ausencias por cualquier motivo, lo que ocurra primero. Se enviará a casa una segunda carta con una solicitud de conferencia cuando un estudiante alcance 9 ausencias injustificadas o 12 ausencias por cualquier motivo, lo que ocurra primero. Además, se hará una remisión a la Oficina de Absentismo Escolar del Condado de Lake cuando un estudiante alcance 9 ausencias injustificadas.
Por favor, comprenda que cada escuela es muy consciente de que hay una serie de enfermedades que se propagan por la comunidad y que un diagnóstico de COVID requiere que el estudiante se quede en casa durante 5 días. Las cartas de asistencia son una forma de comunicación y documentación, y no son punitivas para los estudiantes o las familias. Continúe haciendo que su hijo se quede en casa si está enfermo. Si no está seguro de qué hacer, siempre puede comunicarse con la enfermera de la escuela. Es muy importante que llame para informar cualquier ausencia para que una ausencia no se marque como injustificada. Con la excepción de COVID, se debe proporcionar una nota del médico si un estudiante está en casa por más de 3 días.
Además, si su familia planea perder 10 días consecutivos de clases, tenga en cuenta que se le dará de baja de la escuela y tendrá que volver a inscribirse cuando regrese. Para volver a inscribirse, deberá venir a la escuela de su hijo para verificar su información en el archivo cuando regrese su hijo. No será necesario pagar nueva documentación ni tasas. Además, deberá entregar su Chromebook y cualquier otra tecnología a la escuela antes de irse. Lo más importante es que debe comunicar a su escuela que faltará a la escuela durante 10 días consecutivos.

Mundelein High School quisiera invitar a todos los estudiantes y familias de los estudiantes de noveno grado entrantes a la Noche de la Clase de 2027 el jueves 19 de enero.el.Piden que los padres/tutores y los estudiantes con apellidos A-L lleguen al auditorio de MHS a las 6:00 p. m. para una presentación de 45 minutos. Los padres/tutores y los estudiantes con apellidos M-Z deben asistir a la sesión de las 7:15 p. m. en el auditorio. El programa incluirá una descripción general de sus programas académicos, ubicación de cursos, información sobre el día a día de un estudiante de noveno grado y oportunidades extracurriculares en MHS. Los estudiantes de noveno grado que ingresan se reunirán con estudiantes de secundaria para aprender más sobre lo que experimentan a medida que hagan la transición a MHS.
