Dear Students and Families of West Oak Middle School,
We had a positive and productive week with our volleyball girls and wrestlers continuing to improve, our 8th graders picking their classes for Mundelein High School, and our school finishing up with ACCESS testing! We also celebrated our 100th day and are counting down the days to the end of our 2nd trimester next Friday, 2/9. Please remember that this coming Monday, February 5th, we will be having our Late Start, with classes beginning at 10:00am. For your reference, here is the link with our bus times for that morning. Please review the following announcements as there are a number of important dates and events coming up in the short future. Feel free to reach out to the Main Office if you have any questions and have a great weekend.
8th Grade Field Trip: Our 8th grade class has been studying the World Wars in their Social Studies class and will be attending the Holocaust Museum in Skokie next Wednesday, 2/7. Students will be loading the buses to depart as soon as we start our regular school day. They will not need to bring any money as there is nothing to purchase, and lunches will be provided upon their return to the school.
SHS Freshman Orientation: Thank you for all that attended the Stevenson High School Incoming Freshman Family Orientation this week. If you were not able to attend, here is the Class of 2028 webpage with a recording of this presentation.
8th Grade Field Trip: Our 8th graders are going on a field trip to a Chicago Wolves Hockey game on February 22nd. For your child to attend, parents and guardians must sign this permission Form so that they can attend. Students have been notified that they must be in good standing behaviorally and academically before they will be permitted to attend. Let the office know if you have any questions.
8th Grade Save the Dates: Here are the following events coming up this spring for our 8th grade students. (English/Spanish) If anyone is interested in coordinating our 8th grade dance, please contact Mr. Pedersen. [email protected]
Children’s Show Auditions: The Kirk Players are excited to announce auditions for our upcoming children’s show, The Enchanted Bookshop. Auditions will take place on Sunday, February 4, 6-8 PM, and then again on Wednesday, February 7, from 7-9 PM at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Mundelein. These auditions will consist of reading from the script and you only need to attend one night of auditions. Here is the flyer for more information.
8th Grade Tributes: This year the Yearbook staff is continuing a program just for 8th graders and their families. This program allows families to buy an eighth of a page personal ad in the Yearbook to congratulate their 8th grader on their graduation from West Oak Middle School. In order for this program to work, the Yearbook staff needs parents and guardians to send us, the yearbook staff, your child’s baby picture as well as a brief message of encouragement, love and hopeful wishes. SHS Spring Placement Exam: The Spring language makeup placement exam is scheduled for Saturday, February 17. This exam is for students who were unable to take the Chinese, French, Hebrew, Latin, or German exam on December 16. D76 is excited to announce that all three of our schools, Diamond Lake School, West Oak Intermediate School and West Oak Middle School are embarking on the process of becoming Marzano High Reliability Schools (HRS). By following the HRS framework, each school has a long-term strategic planning guide with certification levels that build upon one another. This extremely rigorous process helps ensure each school is consistently concentrating on effective areas of school operation. Schools are applying for certification for each of the levels below. We are excited to share that all D76 schools are Level 1 Certified! Each school is now pursuing Level 2 Certification.

Standards-Referenced Reporting
Competency-Based Education
In order to help us achieve Part of the Level 2 Certification we need your help to complete the survey that is provided here. Because all three schools are starting this process at the same time, parents with students in multiple school buildings will receive multiple copies of the same survey. We respectfully ask that parents complete the survey for each school, because each school is measured individually. Stevenson Ice Hockey: All current 7th and 8th grade students interested in playing hockey at Stevenson High School in the future, please review this flyer to learn more about the program and to try out.
Illinois Youth Survey: Your child is being asked to participate in a voluntary survey called the Illinois Youth Survey, the purpose of which is to better understand Illinois youth risk and protective behaviors as they relate to students and their success. Participation will involve completing a survey (with no names or identification numbers) that will be confidentially administered by a classroom teacher, counselor, or community member who has received training on administering this survey. Your child’s participation will last no more than one class period (40-45 minutes). Here is the link to the opt-out website if you would not like your child to take this exam. Let the Main Office know if you would like your child to opt-out of the survey.
Veteran’s Day Dinner: Our communities Mundelein Afterschool Coalition will be holding its annual Veterans Appreciation Dinner for April 12th, from 5:30-8:00pm. Here is the letter and flyer for more information.

Estimados estudiantes y familias de la escuela secundaria West Oak,
¡Tuvimos una semana productiva y productiva con nuestras chicas de voleibol y luchadores que continúan mejorando, nuestros estudiantes de 8º grado eligieron sus clases para la Escuela Secundaria Mundelein y nuestra escuela está terminando con las pruebas de ACCESS! Excursión de 8º grado: Nuestra clase de 8º grado ha estado estudiando las Guerras Mundiales en su clase de Estudios Sociales y asistirá al Museo del Holocausto en Skokie el próximo miércoles, 7 de febrero. Los estudiantes subirán a los autobuses para partir tan pronto como comencemos nuestro día escolar regular. No necesitarán traer dinero ya que no hay nada que comprar y se les proporcionará el almuerzo a su regreso a la escuela.

Audiciones para la Obra infantil: ¡Los Kirk Players están emocionados de anunciar las audiciones para nuestra próxima obra infantil, "La Librería Encantada"! Las audiciones tendrán lugar el domingo 4 de febrero, de 6 a 8 p. m., y nuevamente el miércoles 7 de febrero, de 7 a 9 p. m., en la Iglesia Luterana de St. Andrews en Mundelein. Tributos de 8º grado: Este año, el personal del Anuario está continuando un programa exclusivo para estudiantes de 8º grado y sus familias. Este programa permite a las familias comprar una página de anuncio personal en el Anuario para felicitar a su estudiante de 8º grado por su graduación de la escuela secundaria West Oak. Para que este programa funcione, el personal del Anuario necesita que los padres y tutores nos envíen, al personal del anuario, la fotografía de bebé de su hijo/a, así como un breve mensaje de aliento, amor y buenos deseos. Examen de ubicación de primavera de SHS: El examen de ubicación de idiomas de primavera está programado para el sábado 17 de febrero. Este examen es para estudiantes que no pudieron tomar el examen de chino, francés, hebreo, latín o alemán el 16 de diciembre. El D76 se complace en anunciar que nuestras tres escuelas, Diamond Lake School, West Oak Intermediate School y West Oak Middle School, se están embarcando en el proceso de convertirse en Escuelas de alta confiabilidad de Marzano (HRS). Al seguir el marco HRS, cada escuela tiene una guía de planificación estratégica a largo plazo con niveles de certificación que se complementan entre sí. Este proceso extremadamente riguroso ayuda a garantizar que cada escuela se concentre constantemente en áreas efectivas de operación escolar. Las escuelas están solicitando la certificación para cada uno de los niveles siguientes. ¡Nos complace compartir que todas las escuelas del D76 tienen certificación de Nivel 1! Cada escuela ahora está buscando la Certificación de Nivel 2.

Para ayudarnos a lograr parte de la Certificación de Nivel 2, necesitamos su ayuda para completar la encuesta que se proporciona aquí. Debido a que las tres escuelas están iniciando este proceso al mismo tiempo, los padres con estudiantes en varios edificios escolares recibirán varias copias de la misma encuesta. Respetuosamente solicitamos que los padres completen la encuesta para cada escuela, porque cada escuela se mide individualmente.
