November 6: Diamond Lake School Weekly Update

Dear Diamond Lake Families,

We have been in a virtual learning format for a while now and some parents have reported that they are having trouble getting their children to the computer for virtual classes.  If that is happening in your home, it is time to freshen up the routine by adding a little bit of fun.  Here are some general tips to try:

1. Start with a conversation.  Use basic language to ask your son or daughter why he/she doesn’t want to log on.  Chances are, he or she would rather play!  That makes sense, playing is fun and that information from your child gives you a place to start.

2. Contact our DLS office and ask for an at home behavior kit (847-566-6601).  We have created kits for families that include laminated visual schedules, incentive charts and reward charts.  They are easy to use and can be used over and over again.

3. Turn the challenging moments into a game.  Use the visual support that we are happy to share with you to have a contest to see how many check marks can be won for completing activities or use the visual schedule to allow your child to choose the order that activities will be completed in.

4. Reward your student for great work and for reaching their goal.  The reward does not have to be something that is purchased.  Let your child choose what is for dinner, time with you is a great prize or allowing him/her to play with a favorite toy are all great ways to reward your child for making good choices.  

Basically, spice things up a bit by making the daily routine a little more fun!  Please let your child’s teacher know if you need any other ideas or suggestions, we are here to help!

Estimadas Familias de Diamond Lake:

Hemos estado en un formato de aprendizaje virtual por un tipo y algunos padres han informado que están teniendo dificultades para llevar a sus hijos a la computadora para clases virtuales.  Si eso está sucediendo en su casa, es hora de refrescar la rutina añadiendo un poco de diversión.  Aquí hay algunos consejos generales para probar: 

1. Empieza con una conversación.  Usa el lenguaje básico para preguntarle a tu hijo o hija por que no quiere iniciar sesión.  Lo más probable es que él o ella prefiera jugar!  Eso tiene sentido, jugar es divertido y esa información de su hijo le da un lugar para comenzar.

2. Comuniquese con nuestra oficina de DLS y solicite un kit de comportamiento en casa (847-566-6601).  Hemos creado kits para familias que incluyen horarios visuales laminados, gráficos de incentivo y gráficos de recompensas.  Son fáciles de usar y se pueden utilizar una y otra vez.

3. Convierte los momentos desafiantes en un juego.  Utilice el apoyo visual que estamos encantados de compartir con ustedes para tener el concurso para ver cuantas marcas de verificación se pueden ganar para completar actividades o usar el horario visual para permitir que su hijo elija el orden en que se completarán las actividades.

4. Recompense a su estudiante por su gran trabajo y por alcanzar su meta.  La recompensa no tiene que ser algo que se compra.  Deje que su hijo elija lo que es para cenar, el tiempo con usted es un gran premio o permitirle jugar con su juguete favorito son todas excelentes maneras de recompensar a su hijo por tomar buenas decisiones.

Básicamente, condimentar las cosas un poco haciendo que la rutina diaria sea un poco más divertida!  Por favor, hágale saber al maestro de su hijo si necesita otras ideas o sugerencias,  Estamos para ayudarlo!
