Dear Friends and Families of West Oak Middle School:
Thank you to the parents that joined Mr. Pedersen and I for Virtual Coffee with the Principal this morning. We will hold these meetings once a month. And thank you parents for your investment in your students and supporting their learning at home. We have had another week of great student attendance and participation. Please continue to reach out to your teachers or to the administration if you are having any challenges or have any questions. Spirit Week!: Next week is our first Spirit Week! Students have the option of taking a picture of themselves and submitting it to the grade-level Google Classroom so the photo can possibly be used in the yearbook. Here is the flyer for the week. The Spirit Days are the following:

STAR Testing: The STAR test is an important test we use three times a year to measure the progress of our students in reading and math. We will be administering this test remotely October 6th and 7th as a middle school. Students will take the test during first period. In order to make sure students have enough time to take the test, we will be using our AM Assembly Schedule. Students will have from 8:25 to 9:47 to take the test. Students who finish the test can exit the test session and rejoin their first period class at 9:50. The AM assembly schedule has been added below for your convenience. All grade levels follow the same schedule.

Teacher Absences: When a teacher is absent from a class, he/she will communicate to their students through Google Classroom with the work they need to complete for the day. The work should be completed during the scheduled period. Teachers will include a task or a work product that needs to be completed that day to show the students were present and working.
Clubs and Sports: We are actively looking for ways to provide opportunities for our students this year. A few of our clubs will be starting up in October. We are working with our conference on how we can offer as many of our sports as possible during the spring. We are also beginning conversations about offering camps for different sports after-school here regardless of what is being done as a conference. We will communicate more information when it is available.
WeGroup is a club focused on our student coming together to serve the Diamond Lake Community. The contact is Sarah Wysocki [email protected].
The Yearbook Club and Student Broadcast clubs will be beginning as well. The contact for both clubs is [email protected].
Mr. Cunningham and Mr. Pedersen will be starting a Principal’s Advisory Council. Students can apply on a Google form that will be sent to them starting Monday. Some students will also be nominated by teachers. This is an opportunity to give students a voice in our school. We will meet during lunch periods twice a month.
We will begin after-school support for reading and math starting in October. More information will be forthcoming.
School Physicals and Immunizations: Even though we are in a remote learning situation, school physicals and immunizations are still due for 6th grade students on October 1st. Please contact Julie Marchese, our School Nurse, with any questions at (847)566-9220.

Prueba STAR: La prueba STAR es una prueba importante que damos tres veces al año para medir el progreso de nuestros estudiantes en lectura y matemáticas. Estaremos administrando esta prueba de forma remota el 6 y 7 de octubre como escuela secundaria. Los estudiantes tomarán la prueba durante el primer período. Ausencias de maestros: Cuando un maestro está ausente de una clase, él / ella le comunicará a sus estudiantes a través de Google Classroom con el trabajo que necesitan completar durante el día.
