WOIS News

Early Release Monday

This Monday, 10.5.2020 is an Early Release Monday.  Dismissal will be at 11:30.  We have made some changes to our schedule for Early Release.  Our core content areas will take place between 8:00-9:30am, and our Specials and Intervention times will shift up to 9:30-11:30.

STAR Assessment

We will begin our Fall STAR Benchmark Assessment next week.  These assessments will be facilitated remotely, in small groups.  Each grade level will have designated days for testing, and small groups will be assigned a testing window beginning at 8:30, 9:30, 10:30 or 1:30.  Teachers will communicate your child’s specific testing window with you.  Please make sure that your child is on time for this session.  The STAR assessment is not timed, and if a student needs longer than the one hour window, they will be allowed to continue while the next group gets started.

Grade level testing dates are as follows:

    5th Grade: Tuesday, 10.6 (Math) and Wednesday, 10.7 (Reading)

    4th Grade: Thursday, 10.8 (Math) and Friday, 10.9 (Reading)

    3rd Grade: Tuesday, 10.13 (Math) and Wednesday, 10.14 (Reading)

Meal Pick-Up Schedule Change

Beginning Tuesday, 10.6.2020, District 76 will be altering the meal pick-up schedule to take place only on Tuesday and Friday each week.  Families will receive meals for 7 days between the two pick-up dates (3 on Tuesday, 4 on Friday).

Online Chess Wizards Opportunity

WOIS is teaming up with Chess Wizards to provide an online Chess Club option.  These classes will be facilitated by Chess Wizards.  More information can be found in these links.      English         Spanish

Teacher Google Websites

As a parent, you have access to your child’s Google Classroom.  However, the information that you can access isn’t always what you want to see.  WOIS teachers have developed a Google Sites page for you to view specific information about your child’s class.  Just visit the staff directory, linked here, and view the teacher’s website by clicking on the link beneath their name.

Is Screen Brightness Giving Your Student a Headache?

Screen brightness/blue light is something that can cause fatigue with all of us during remote learning.   Please view the links below for information on how to adjust the lighting on your various devices.

My Commitment to You

This is not the way we are used to starting the school year.  I want to thank you all for your encouraging emails and phone calls.  As we embark on the 2020-2021 school year, our main goal is to provide the most authentic education experience that we can without having students with us in person.  We will be increasing the live instruction and engagement as well as curriculum delivery compared to what was executed in the spring.  We will also be utilizing curriculum planning forward documents that allow each grade level to capture skills and standards that we didn’t approach during the 3rd trimester last year, while we incorporate skills and standards that are scheduled for the 1st trimester of this year.  Additionally, we are striving to present a more streamlined online platform utilizing Google Classroom with less links for students to navigate.  We will need to be flexible with scheduling and programming, during our remote learning, but WOIS is committed to providing the best learning experience for the students.  After we begin the school year at the end of this month, I will schedule virtual “Coffee with the Principal” in order to keep you up to date with what we are doing, how well we are doing it, what is coming next, and have an opportunity for you to provide me with your feedback and ask questions.  This continues to be new territory for all of us, but there is no other community and District that I’d rather experience this with.

Grade Level Supply Lists

Although we are beginning the year remotely, it will be beneficial to purchase school supplies, especially writing instruments, notebooks, markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc.  Our commitment is to create the most authentic remote learning experience.  In order to do this, students will need access to supplies.  You can find the grade level student supply lists here.

Stevenson Move-A-Thon: Get Started and Get Moving!

Monday, October 5th – Monday, October 19th

The Stevenson Move-A-Thon is a fun, virtual way to keep moving and support students and families with limited resources. Walk, bike, run, dance, or play for 125 minutes or more each week of the event. Together, we can stay healthy and positively impact our Stevenson community.

Getting started is easy and we're here to help! Sign up as an individual, family, or socially-distant team. Move however, whenever, and wherever you like. In less than 20 minutes a day, you’ll reach your goal. Individuals who raise $125 or more will earn Move-A-Thon swag.

United Way of Lake County has created a hotline that allows individuals to make a simple phone call to share what help is needed and what type of services can be offered in our community.  211 is always open, always confidential, and always free. Salida temprana lunes

Este lunes 5.10.2020 es un día de salida temprana. La hora de salida será a las 11:30. Hemos hecho algunos cambios a nuestro horario para la salida temprana. Nuestras áreas de contenido principal estarán entre 8:00-9:00 a.m. y nuestros tiempos de especiales e intervenciones estarán entre 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Examen de STAR 

Vamos a empezar nuestro examen de STAR para el otoño la próxima semana. Estos exámenes van a ser facilitados en una manera remota, tomados en grupos pequeños. Cada nivel de grado va a tener días asignados para hacer el examen, y grupos pequeños van a recibir un tiempo asignado para tomar el examen empezando a las 8:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. o 1:30 p.m. Los maestros van a comunicar con usted la hora específica de su hijo/a. Por favor, asegure que su hijo/a está conectado/a en tiempo para la sesión. El examen de STAR no tiene un limite de tiempo, y si un/a estudiante necesita más que la hora asignada, va a estar permitido/a a continuar haciendo el examen con el próximo grupo. 

Las fechas para los exámenes del nivel de grado son:

    5to grado: martes 6.10 (matemáticas) y miércoles 7.10 (lectura)

    4to grado: jueves 8.10 (matemáticas) y viernes 9.10 (lectura)

    3er grado: martes 13.10 (matemáticas) y miércoles 14.10 (lectura)

Cambio al horario de la recogida de comida 

Empezando el martes 6.10.2020, el Distrito 76 va a cambiar el horario de la recogida de comida para tomar lugar solamente los martes y los viernes cada semana. Las familias van a recibir comida para 7 días entre las dos fechas de recogida (3 el martes, 4 el viernes).

Mi compromiso a ustedes

Esta no es la manera en que estamos acostumbrados a comenzar el año escolar. Quiero decirles gracias a todos ustedes por sus correos electrónicos y llamadas telefónicas alentadores . A medida que nos embarcamos en el año escolar 2020-2021, nuestra meta principal es proveer la experiencia educativa más auténtica que podemos sin tener a los estudiantes en persona. Vamos a aumentar la instrucción en vivo y la participación además del currículo en comparación con lo que se llevó a cabo en la primavera. También vamos a utilizar documentos de planificación curricular que permiten a cada nivel de grado enfocar en las habilidades y los estándares que no alcanzamos durante el tercer trimestre del año escolar pasado, mientras incorporamos las habilidades y los estándares que están programados para el primer trimestre de este año escolar. Además, queremos presentar una plataforma en línea más optimizada utilizando Google Classroom con menos enlaces para que los estudiantes naveguen. Tenemos que ser flexibles con los horarios y la programación durante el aprendizaje a distancia, pero WOIS hace el compromiso de proveer la mejor experiencia educativa para los estudiantes. Después de que comenzamos el año escolar a finales de este mes, voy a programar unas citas virtuales de “Café con el Director” con el fin de mantenerles a ustedes actualizados con lo que estamos haciendo, lo bien que lo estamos haciendo, lo que va a suceder próximo, y darles una oportunidad de hacer comentarios y preguntas.
