October 16: Diamond Lake School Weekly Update

Dear Diamond Lake Families,

Our virtual world has added some additional details for parents to think about in terms of child safety.  At school, we use adult controls to block inappropriate websites and to alert our staff if a student wanders into unsafe sites. We also know that parents are being diligent with supervising children that are spending a great deal of time online.  I wanted to remind parents that although supervision is important, it is just as important to teach children the safety rules that apply when they are accessing the internet.

Parents typically remind their children not to talk to strangers or to go any place unless he/she has asked for permission.  Remind your kids that the same rules apply online.  Tell your children that before a new site is visited they need to check in with you so that you can make sure it is appropriate.  Just as in real life, tell your kids that they need to let you know if a stranger tries to contact him/her or if anything that is upsetting or confusing pops up on the screen.  Although we can’t wait to be learning in person again soon, the doorway into the virtual world is open to students of all ages.  Keeping the conversation going about internet safety is important for all families and will help parents to feel more comfortable with supervising children who are online.

Estimadas Familias de Diamond Lake:

Nuestro mundo virtual ha agregado algunos detalles adicionales para que los padres piensen en términos de seguridad infantil. En la escuela, usamos controles de adultos para bloquear sitios web inapropiados y alertar a nuestro personal si un estudiante ingresa a sitios inseguros. También sabemos que los padres están siendo diligentes al supervisar a los niños que pasan mucho tiempo en línea. Quería recordarles a los padres que aunque la supervisión es importante, es igualmente importante enseñar a los niños las reglas de seguridad que se aplican cuando acceden a Internet.

Los padres suelen recordar a sus hijos que no hablen con extraños ni que vayan a ningún lugar a menos que hayan pedido permiso. Recuérdales a sus hijos que las mismas reglas se aplican en línea. Dígales a sus hijos que antes de visitar un sitio nuevo, deben consultar con usted para asegurarse de que sea apropiado. Al igual que en la vida real, dígales a sus hijos que deben avisarle si un extraño intenta comunicarse con él o si aparece algo molesto o confuso en la pantalla. Aunque no podemos esperar a volver a aprender en persona pronto, la puerta al mundo virtual está abierta para estudiantes de todas las edades. Mantener la conversación sobre la seguridad en Internet es importante para todas las familias y ayudará a los padres a sentirse más cómodos supervisando a los niños que están en línea.
