Early Release, Friday 10.30
Friday, 10.30.2020 is an Early Release Friday. Dismissal will be at 11:30. We have made some changes to our schedule for Early Release. Our core content areas will take place between 8:00-9:30am, and our Specials and Intervention times will shift up to 9:30-11:30.
Red Ribbon Week
West Oak Intermediate School will be taking part in a week long, district-wide program called Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week was designed to create an awareness concerning the problems related to the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. The theme this year is “Be Brave. Be Healthy. Be Happy.”
Red Ribbon Week started in 1985 and has grown into a national observance -- a time for schools and communities across the nation to come together in the fight against drugs and other unhealthy choices.
At West Oak Intermediate School we will focus on the many aspects of health and safety (and we will be having a little fun too). You can take advantage of this time to open a dialogue at home and discuss issues like peer pressure and making healthy choices for a happy future.
Below you will find a list of dress up days to celebrate this week. We hope you will support your student showing their commitment to living a brave, healthy, and happy life.

Halloween Car Parade
On Friday, October 30th, West Oak Intermediate School will be hosting a Halloween Family Car Parade for WOIS students. WOIS staff will be present, standing outside in costume, and socially distant with masks on, to wave to our students and families as you pass by. At the end of the parade route, we will have a touchless delivery of a good bag for WOIS students.
In order to remain safe and within the parameters of health department guidelines, please follow these simple rules:
Please enter and exit the parking lot on the north entrance, complete the full loop, and exit the south exit according to the pattern in the map below
Drive SLOWLY
Do not leave your vehicle at any time
Staff will be socially distanced with masks on along the sides of the parade route
Only stop at the goody bag table to receive your goody bag at the end of the parade

Report Card and STAR Report Delivery
This year, we will begin sending both the student STAR Assessment Report and Trimester Report Cards home electronically through our School Messenger service. You will receive a link to your child’s report to view and download. Please make sure that we have your correct email address on file so that the reports are sent to you.
Online Chess Wizards Opportunity
WOIS is teaming up with Chess Wizards to provide an online Chess Club option. These classes will be facilitated by Chess Wizards. More information can be found in these links. English Spanish
Teacher Google Websites
As a parent, you have access to your child’s Google Classroom. However, the information that you can access isn’t always what you want to see. WOIS teachers have developed a Google Sites page for you to view specific information about your child’s class. Just visit the staff directory, linked here, and view the teacher’s website by clicking on the link beneath their name.
Is Screen Brightness Giving Your Student a Headache?
Screen brightness/blue light is something that can cause fatigue with all of us during remote learning. Please view the links below for information on how to adjust the lighting on your various devices.

My Commitment to You
This is not the way we are used to starting the school year. I want to thank you all for your encouraging emails and phone calls. As we embark on the 2020-2021 school year, our main goal is to provide the most authentic education experience that we can without having students with us in person. We will be increasing the live instruction and engagement as well as curriculum delivery compared to what was executed in the spring. We will also be utilizing curriculum planning forward documents that allow each grade level to capture skills and standards that we didn’t approach during the 3rd trimester last year, while we incorporate skills and standards that are scheduled for the 1st trimester of this year. Additionally, we are striving to present a more streamlined online platform utilizing Google Classroom with less links for students to navigate. We will need to be flexible with scheduling and programming, during our remote learning, but WOIS is committed to providing the best learning experience for the students. After we begin the school year at the end of this month, I will schedule virtual “Coffee with the Principal” in order to keep you up to date with what we are doing, how well we are doing it, what is coming next, and have an opportunity for you to provide me with your feedback and ask questions. This continues to be new territory for all of us, but there is no other community and District that I’d rather experience this with.

Grade Level Supply Lists
Although we are beginning the year remotely, it will be beneficial to purchase school supplies, especially writing instruments, notebooks, markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc. Our commitment is to create the most authentic remote learning experience. Alden Terrace of McHenry/Alden Long Grove Rehab & Health Halloween Drive Through
We have created a unique and fun event that will hopefully bring the Halloween spirit to the community since some neighborhoods are not allowing trick-or-treating. Both campuses will be decorated as a spooky Halloween drive-thru that you can bring your kids out to see. Each child that attends will get their own pre-packaged bag of candy! Come out to see our staff dressed up in our finest costumes and get some holiday treats! Please click the links for more information English Spanish
This event follows Lake County and CDC guidelines with regards to prepackaged candy and all staff will be wearing appropriate DME and will be appropriately socially distanced. Let your kiddos know that they AND their families are welcome to drive thru and see at least on the outside how great Long Grove can be!
Stevenson Virtual Theater!
For our Fall play this year, we are excited to have teamed up with the Stevenson Foundation to produce the small-scale musical - OLIVÉRio: A Brazilian Twist.
OLIVÉRio is a modern retelling of Dickens' Oliver Twist, set in present-day Rio de Janeiro during a vibrant New Year's Eve and Carnaval. The musical projects a message of hope and highlights the themes of child poverty throughout the world. It runs 70 minutes.
The FREE viewing of this production is this Saturday at 2pm and 7pm, and Sunday at 2pm.
The attached materials include a flyer that communicates how to obtain a free access code for the show and a parent & teacher guide that helps to navigate the context and themes.
We are so fortunate to have your school partner with us in giving students the gift of theatre and we look forward to welcoming your school's community to our audience this weekend!

La Escuela Intermedia de West Oak va a participar en un programa del distrito que dura una semana se llama “La Semana de Cinta Roja.” La Semana de Cinta Roja estuvo diseñada para crear conciencia acerca de los problemas relacionados con el uso de tabaco, alcohol y otras drogas. El viernes 30 de octubre la Escuela Intermedia de West Oak va a proporcionar un “Desfile familiar de carros para Halloween” para los estudiantes de la WOIS. Mi compromiso a ustedes
Esta no es la manera en que estamos acostumbrados a comenzar el año escolar. Quiero decirles gracias a todos ustedes por sus correos electrónicos y llamadas telefónicas alentadores . A medida que nos embarcamos en el año escolar 2020-2021, nuestra meta principal es proveer la experiencia educativa más auténtica que podemos sin tener a los estudiantes en persona. Alden Terrace of McHenry/Alden Long Grove Rehab & Health “Paseo por carro para el Día de Brujas”
Hemos creado un evento único y divertido que esperamos traiga el espíritu del Día de Brujas a la comunidad porque algunas vecindades no permiten pidiendo “dulces o travesuras.” Ambos campuses van a estar decorados como un paseo espeluznante donde puede llevar a sus hijos por carro. Cada niño que asiste va a recibir su propia bolsa de dulces! Venga para ver nuestro personal vestido por nuestros mejores disfraces y recibir algunos dulces.
