The State of Illinois recently passed a state budget for the first time in years. However, Governor Rauner’s amendatory veto of Senate Bill 1 (SB1) may make this budget meaningless. If the veto of SB1 is not overridden, Illinois schools will not get an equitable funding model for its students. School funding will be further delayed, some schools may possibly see a reduction or not receive funds at all, which will continue to add to the chaos schools have been facing for years.
We are fortunate that D76 will not be impacted as much as other districts since we are not very reliant on state grants. The implications of the amendatory veto are far reaching and many school districts throughout our state may have trouble remaining open. We are grateful for our Board of Education and the district's administrative team for their fiscal conservative practices, thoughtful budget planning and foresight to maintain a comfortable fund balance. This fund balance and the amount we receive from our local property taxes, will allow our district to withstand the state's financial uncertainty and open D76 schools on time.
