July 21, 2015 - UPDATE on Diamond Lake Road Closure

The road closure and detour route (pictured in the map below) was put in place on Friday, July 17, in response to the culvert collapse under Diamond Lake Road at Indian Creek. LCDOT crews have been out at the site to monitor any changing conditions and to install a more permanent barrier at the site since the road will be closed for several weeks. The traffic department is monitoring traffic along the detour route and we have not observed any additional delays.

To replace the culvert and repair the road, there are several important steps that must be completed. Early this week we are researching the fastest and most effective way to acquire the materials, revise the design plans, secure permits, and stage the necessary construction activities. It is also necessary to coordinate with the utility companies and work with the local school districts to plan for schools opening in August with a road closure and detour route in place.

Typically, the design, fabrication and construction of the new culvert crossing would take a number of months but we are working to accelerate the schedule to complete the work and re-open the road to traffic by early September. This is an aggressive timeline which will require close coordination and minimal impacts from external factors such as weather which can disrupt construction and cause delays.

July 17, 2015 - Diamond Lake Road Closed for Culvert Repair

Long Grove - On Friday, July 17, the culvert under Diamond Lake Road at Indian Creek collapsed and a full road closure is necessary. A detour will be in place until the repair is complete.

The Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) regularly inspects the culverts in our system and this one was scheduled for replacement in 2016. The design was already in progress and LCDOT had planned to have the repair done next summer before the start of the 2016-2017 school year. With the heavy rains we’ve had this year, the culvert deteriorated more quickly than expected. LCDOT is continuously monitoring other culverts to watch for changing conditions.

The road will be closed until the repair is complete. LCDOT will work as quickly as possible to get the road back open. At this time, it is hard to estimate the length of time needed for this closure because pipes this size must be custom ordered.
