April 6, 2018
Dear District 76 Families,
There have been some questions/feedback brought to our attention regarding the soft lockdown that took place at Fairhaven yesterday, April 5, 2018. The community has asked why more information was not shared sooner, why more details of the incident were not shared, why were parents not made aware of the situation more quickly, and if any of our schools were experiencing a crisis?
Unfortunately, schools sometimes experience situations that involve the police/fire department. When the police/fire departments become involved, the school/district are under their direction and advisement. Yesterday, the Mundelein Police Department (MPD) contacted Dr. Fredericks and directed her to put the school into a “soft lockdown” due to a potential situation in the nearby community that they were investigating. We were not able to share any information with the public as advised by the MPD. Shortly after, the police paused their investigation, we were informed that there was no significant threat to our school, students or staff, but we should keep students inside for recess to be cautious. The students instructional day went on as usual and staff were informed of this direction.
Students safety is our priority and timely communication is very important. When the police and/or fire departments are involved in our school/district situations we take our direction from them and only communicate what and when we are advised to do so. It is important that you have confidence in our safety procedures and know we will communicate with you as soon as we are able. If you have questions about yesterday’s incident please contact the MPD at 847-968-4600. If you have questions about our school/district safety procedures, please contact Dr. Fredericks 847-949-0991 and/or me at 847-566-9221.
Thank you for your support and understanding.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bhavna Sharma-Lewis, Superintendent

Sinceramente,
Dra. Bhavna Sharma-Lewis, Superintendente
